Nelson Named Southern Player of the Year; Tigers Place Five on All-CWPA
November 19, 2015 | Men's Water Polo
Joining Nelson on the All-CWPA Southern first team was sophomore goalie Vojislav Mitrovic. Jovan Jeremic, Jordan Colina, and Jamie Kuprenas each earned a spot on the second team.
Twice earning CWPA Player of the Week honors this season, Nelson has served as the catalyst to the Tigers' offense, racking up 60 goals and 18 assists. Also tied for the team-lead in blocks (10), he is second on the squad in ejections drawn (29) and third in steals (33).
Finding the back of the opposing net in all but one of his 23 appearances, Nelson's 60 goals are a career high and rank 11th on the program's single-season charts. His 187 career goals are currently sixth in the program's record book.
Piecing together another stellar season, Mitrovic logged 585:27 minutes in net en route to a 17-4 overall record. Capturing the Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week honor on four separate occasions in 2015, Mitrovic posted a 0.593 save percentage.
Recording double digit saves in 16 of his outings, Mitrovic has ranked up 245 stops, putting him on track to eclipse his total of 253 saves as a rookie, which already ranks second in program history. In the Southern final against Johns Hopkins, Mitrovic turned away 20 shots, tying a Princeton single-game record in the process. Gregory Stoll currently holds the program benchmark for saves in a single season with 266 in 1997.
Continuing to play a vital role in the Tigers' success, Jeremic sits among the squad's leaders in goals (30), assists (20), and steals (20). Jeremic's 20 steals are the most for the junior in any single season and he remains on pace to surpass his previous career bests in goals (33) and assists (22). Factoring into the scoring in all but two of his 23 appearances, Jeremic dished out a season-high three assists against Iona (9/5) while scoring a season-best four goals in the Southern Division semifinals against Navy (11/7).
Following up an impressive rookie campaign, Colina is second on the team in goals (46) and is tied for third in assists (24). Nabbing a team-high 42 steals, while drawing a squad-best 32 ejections, Colina is also 28-9 (0.757) on sprints. Netting at least three goals in nine of his outings in 2015, Colina collected multiple assists on six occasions.
Kuprenas enters this weekend's CWPA Championship tied for third on the team in assists with 24. Starting 22 of 23 games this season, Kuprenas has also collected 11 goals, 17 steals, and five blocks. Over the course of his tenure in Orange and Black, Kuprenas has amassed 64 goals and 91 helpers, with his career assist total ranking fourth school history.
Princeton opens CWPA Championship play on Friday, Nov. 20 against the winner of Bucknell and George Washington.
