Men's Swim/Dive Posts Impressive Wins Over Both Cornell, Penn

The Princeton men's swimming and diving team opened its season in solid fashion Saturday by sweeping a pair of Ivy League rivals at DeNunzio Pool. Princeton defeated Cornell 234-64 and Penn 173-124.5
The Tiger men opened the meet with an impressive 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of En-Wei Hu-Van Wright, Byron Sanborn, Ben Schafer and Julian Mackrel won the event in 1:29.22, while the foursome of Andrew Helber, Jack Pohlmann, Alexander Lewis and Sandy Bole topped the rest of the field in 1:30.98.
Senior tri-captain Teo D'Alessandro won the 200 free in 1:38.13 to open the individual races, while Hu-Van Wright topped a 1-2-3 Tiger finish in the 100 back in 47.73. Sanborn followed that win by taking the 100 breast in 55.56, while sophomore Corey Okubo headed a 1-2-3 Princeton finish in the 200 fly in 1:47.78. Freshman Cole Buese pushed Okubo before taking second in 1:48.27.
Mackrel took second in the 50 free in 20.65, but Hu-Van Wright came back to win the 100 in 44.37. Okubo added another win in the 200 back (1:47.12), which came at the expense of teammate Buese (1:47.40), and Sanborn followed with a second-place finish in the 2:02.56.
Junior Sam Smiddy won the 500 in 4:30.06, while Schafer came back to win the 100 fly in 49.14. Okubo finished the individual swimming events by taking third in the 200 IM in 1:51.05, while the team of Hu-Van Wright, D'Alessandro, Murphy McQuet and Schafer won the 400 free relay in 2:58.53.
In the diving competition, Noam Altman-Kurosaki won the 1-meter event with 271.45, barely edging out teammate Liam Fitzgerald, who finished second with 271.15 points. Fitzgerald also took second in the 3-meter competition with 291.10 points.
