BOX SCORE
PRINCETON, N.J. (2/13/15) - Senior Tucker Brockett scored the game-winning goal and sophomore Colton Phinney made 28 saves as the Princeton men's hockey team defeated Clarkson on Friday at Hobey Baker Rink.
The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead in the first period, but the Tigers net goals in the second and third to earn their first victory over Clarkson (11-14-4, 8-7-2 ECAC) at home since the 2011-12 season.
Defender Terrance Amorosa tallied his first goal of the season at 13:15 as Clarkson took advantage of miscue on a Princeton (4-17-2, 2-14-1 ECAC) line change. With the Tigers trying to dump the puck down the ice, Troy Josephs knocked it down in front of the Princeton bench and it landed at the feet of Amorosa who had clearance for a shot straight down the middle of the ice.
Senior Aaron Kesselman tied the game up early in the second period with his third marker of the season. Freshman Eric Robinson recorded his first collegiate assist feeding Kesselman in the defensive zone. Kesselman's shot was blocked away, but he chased after it and got the puck behind the net. He sent it up to classmate Tom Kroshus on the left point and just as Kroshus was about to wind up, he saw Kesselman open on the weak side and he threw it to him for the back door goal.
The Tigers just missed going up 2-1 in the second on a great shift by Kyle Rankin, Mike Ambrosia and Ryan Siiro. Siiro's shot went just wide of the far post as he got Clarkson netminder Greg Lewis leaning and had a big open space on the left side.
The second period saw a lot of open ice as four penalties were called in a span of 4:03, but neither team would convert. Kesselman nearly got his second goal of the game with 22 seconds left in the period but he hit the post.
Jonathan Liau made a huge play that led to the winning goal as he raced for a puck that would have been determined icing. He got to it near the extended red and swung his stick to push it into the middle of the ice for Brockett before colliding into the boards and Brockett tapped in the goal at 7:06.
Phinney made a number of big saves to keep his team ahead as the clock hit the 5-minute mark. He made three before Clarkson called a timeout and pulled Lewis for the extra attacker, and then stopped four in 25 seconds as the Golden Knights furiously tried to get the equalizer.
Phinney made 28 saves in the win, while Lewis stopped 16.
Princeton was 0 for 2 on the power play and Clarkson was 0 for 1.
Princeton hosts No. 20 St. Lawrence tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The Saints dropped a 2-1 game at No. 13 Quinnipiac this evening.
