South Florida Takes Men's Tennis Blue Gray Final
February 22, 2015 | Men's Tennis
While Princeton was successful in taking down two higher-ranked opponents on the weekend at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Alabama, a third wasn't to be Sunday at Auburn.
No. 24 South Florida topped No. 50 Princeton 4-0 in the event's final, which was moved from Montgomery, Alabama to Auburn University's indoor courts due to rain. Princeton had defeated No. 30 Mississippi State and No. 35 Clemson earlier in the weekend to reach the final.
The Tigers came up just short in the doubles point, which USF won in a tiebreaker on court two. The Bulls then took the first three singles matches to be decided, on courts one, three and six. Alex Day was the only Tiger to win a first set in singles play, while Zack McCourt and Tom Colautti won at first doubles to make the match on court two the decider for the afternoon's first point.
Princeton, now at 9-2 on the season, will return to action next Saturday at Penn State before hosting a pair of matches Sunday against Buffalo and Monmouth.

Coach Billy Pate on the match: "South Florida played a great match in singles and though I don't think we played our best, they had a lot to do with that. We had a great opportunity to get the doubles point and I think that would have really given us a chance. We were chipping away and coming back in some matches but just couldn't turn the corner today. Nonetheless, it was a great tournament and we really improved and grew during this weekend. We're excited to get back to work for a very good Penn State team on Saturday." |
