Princeton Draws SMU In NCAA Men's Tennis Opening Round

2026 NCAA MEN'S TENNIS BRACKET
The Princeton men's tennis team had to wait until the very end of the NCAA Selection Show Monday afternoon to see its name called. Given their season, it was more about anxiousness to see where the Tigers were headed rather than if they were headed anywhere at all.
Just before the 30-minute show ended, Princeton flashed on the screen, with a first-round matchup against SMU, which will take place at the University of Texas this Friday at 11 am Eastern/10 am Central. The host Longhorns will play Texas-Corpus Christi in the second match of day Friday, and the winners will play in the second round Saturday at 5 Eastern.
Princeton will be competing in the NCAA tournament for the third straight season and the fourth time in five years. A year ago Princeton defeated St. John's 4-0 in the first round before losing to No. 4 Virginia.
The Tigers reached a high of No. 19 in the ITA rankings this season, which included winning the eight-team Ivy League event known as the ECAC tournament. Injuries hurt the Tigers in the Ivy League, but they snapped a five-game losing streak to defeat Yale and Brown on the final weekend of the regular season.
Princeton brings a 16-10 record into the tournament. The Tigers have wins over NCAA teams Pepperdine, Buffalo, Penn, Columbia and North Carolina, while eight of their losses came against teams that made the field of 64.
SMU finished the regular season with a 19-10 overall record and an 8-5 record (tied for fifth) in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Mustangs are led by No. 1 singles player Trevor Svajda, the NCAA singles runner-up this past fall, when Princeton's No. 1 player Paul Inchauspe reached the semifinals. Princeton and SMU have played twice, most recently in 1995.
