Last weekend, it was a tournament at Florida Atlantic that opened Princeton's softball season. This weekend, as the Tigers head back to Florida, the University of Central Florida will welcome the Tigers along with Florida A&M, Iowa and Long Island.
Princeton opened 1-4 at FAU's tournament, getting a win over North Florida Saturday. This weekend, Princeton will see one of the teams that defeated it last weekend, Florida A&M, while meeting UCF for a second straight year, Long Island for the first time since 2007, and Iowa for the first time ever. The last time the Tigers defeated a Big Ten program at the time of the game was in 2006 against Illinois.
The tournament will include two games Friday and two Saturday along with a consolation or championship game Sunday. While only UCF has a winning record among the teams in the event, the Knights are ranked No. 17 in the nation by the NFCA and fell just 2-1 to No. 1 Florida Wednesday.
All three of Princeton's rookies saw game action last weekend, with pitcher Ashley LaGuardia shouldering 21 of the team's 32 innings and picking up four of the five decisions. Infielder Danielle Dockx and outfielder Kylee Pierce each started all five games.
Of the eight Tigers who had more than five at-bats last weekend, two emerged with batting averages north of .300, with senior Rachel Rendina at .333 while going 5 of 15 and classmate Cara Worden at .308 after a 4-of-13 weekend.
Following the weekend, Princeton will be off until it spends its spring break week in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia playing a total of 13 games.
