Princeton led all afternoon at Maryland, but the Terrapins led at the end and that was all Maryland had to do to hold off a Tiger bid to knock off a second Big Ten team this season.

After a leadoff out in the seventh, Maryland got a single, a double and a walk to load the bases. Princeton was able to get a force out at home to stand one out away from holding on for the win, but Maryland's Mandy Gardner drove home two to win the game, 6-5.

Princeton grabbed the lead in the top of the first when Haley Hineman had a bases-clearing double, and although Maryland got one back in the first and fourth innings, Princeton was able to increase its lead to 5-2 one base at a time in the top of the fifth, pushing one across on an error and another on a bases-loaded walk. Maryland got two back in the bottom half on a Corey Schwartz home run to pull within 5-4, and that's where it stood entering the last of the seventh.


Alyssa Schmidt led Princeton at the plate, going 2 for 4 while getting a third of Princeton's six hits.

Princeton was one out away from victory when Maryland's Mandy Gardner drove in the game-tying and go-ahead runs in the seventh inning, saving the win for her team.

• Junior Shanna Christian had her second start of the season and threw the first 4 2/3 innings before Ashley LaGuardia entered in relief. LaGuardia, a freshman, has appeared in all 10 games so far.

• Sophomore Haley Hineman's first-inning double was her first of the year. She had a team-high seven last season.

• Princeton was looking for its second win over a Big Ten team this season. The Tigers beat Iowa in Florida in the last weekend of February.

• Princeton was playing its first game since Feb. 28. The Tigers had their last game at Central Florida rained out, had last weekend off for midterms and saw their games this weekend at George Washington postponed and then canceled after Saturday's rain.

• Maryland now leads the all-time series 11-6-1 after getting a win in the teams' first meeting since 2012.


Princeton will stay in the D.C. area to face Georgetown in a 4 p.m. twinbill Tuesday. The games will be played at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy at Fort Dupont Park in Southeast Washington.
