Georgetown, George Mason Ahead in Midweek Twinbills for Softball
March 17, 2015 | Softball
Princeton's spring trip through the Mid-Atlantic will continue Tuesday and Wednesday in and around the nation's capital with visits to Georgetown and George Mason.
The Tigers were away from competition for 15 days until Monday, partly due to midterm week and partly due to weekend rain, and yet Princeton still came within an out of knocking off Maryland on the Terrapins' home field in Monday's 6-5 single-game loss.
Both Tuesday's and Wednesday's contests will be doubleheaders. The Georgetown twinbill will start at 4 p.m. and will be held at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy in Fort Dupont Park in Southeast Washington, while Wednesday's games at George Mason will start at 3 p.m.
The Tigers enter the midweek with a record of 3-7. After a 1-4 start to the season at Florida Atlantic's tournament, Princeton went 2-2 at UCF's tournament before Monday's loss at Maryland. Each of Princeton's last three losses has come by one run and each of the last two wins were run-rules.
Georgetown enters Tuesday's games with a record of 9-13, and the Princeton games will be Georgetown's last before opening Big East play against Villanova Saturday. George Mason endured an 0-10 start to the season, including a 21-20 eight-inning slugfest loss to South Carolina-Upstate, over February's first two weekends before seeing the next two weekends lost to rain. Since then, things have started to turn for the Patriots, who split two meetings apiece with Virginia and Georgetown while being swept by Akron.
Sophomore Haley Hineman enters Tuesday as Princeton's top hitter among those with double-figure at-bats at .333 (9-27), while rookie Ashley LaGuardia has appeared in every game in the circle, having thrown 37 of Princeton's 61 2/3 innings on the way to a 2-5 record and a 4.35 ERA in her first collegiate season.
After Wednesday's games, Princeton will head south from the D.C. area to play in Liberty's tournament in Lynchburg, Virginia beginning Thursday.
