Fencing Moves to Fourth at NCAA Finals Entering Last Day
March 21, 2015 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Princeton moved up one spot to fourth place after the first day of women's competition at the NCAA Championships at Ohio State.
Princeton is the only team to finish fourth or better - the standard for taking home a team trophy - in each of the last four years.
The Tigers won 51 bouts Saturday, behind only Notre Dame's women (59) and Columbia's (55). With the team title going to the program with the most wins between men's and women's competition, Columbia has 136 wins in pursuit of its first title since 1993, eight in front of defending champion Penn State at 128 with Notre Dame also close behind at 127. Princeton sits six wins behind the Irish at 121 and one in front of Ohio State's 120. St. John's (113) and Harvard (107) round out the teams with 100+ wins heading into the final day.
Columbia, Notre Dame and Princeton have in their favor that each school qualified the maximum six women to the NCAAs, giving each 48 opportunities Sunday to earn wins. Penn State, St. John's and Harvard each have 40 bouts left and Ohio State has 32.
Individually, five of the six Tigers are in All-America position and senior Ambika Singh is close behind. Junior Anna Van Brummen is the only Tiger who enters Sunday in a top-four position needed to advance to the individual title bouts, having won 11 of her 15 matches Saturday to stand third among épée fencers. Classmate Isabel Ford is eighth with nine wins.
Saber fencers freshman Allison Lee and junior Gracie Stone are eighth and ninth with nine and eight wins, and foil fencers sophomore Ashley Tsue and Singh are 10th and 14th with eight and six wins. Singh is looking to become the second Princeton women's foil to finish as a four-time All-America, and a top-12 finish is needed for that honor.
