ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Princeton University baseball team closed out a four-game set with the United States Naval Academy by splitting a Sunday doubleheader with the Midshipmen.
Dropping the first game of the twinbill, 3-1, the Tigers rebounded in nightcap, securing a 3-2 come-from-behind decision. Improving to 3-13 on the season, Princeton returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 24 for a mid-week showdown against in-state rival Seton Hall.
GAME 1: NAVY 3, PRINCETON 1 (7 innings)
Unable to overcome an early deficit, Princeton dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 3-1.
Wasting little time putting the Tigers on the board, Zack Belski singled in Billy Arendt, who led off the top of the first with a double to right. With two outs in the bottom half of the frame, Sean Trent singled up the middle before Leland Saile found a hole on the left side. Ben Lowe then punched a single to right to plate the tying run.
Once again threatening in the bottom of the third, Travis Blue singled up the middle before Brad Borosak drew a walk to put two aboard. After a Trent base-knock, Saile drove in a pair of runs with a single to leftfield.
Protecting his lead, Navy starter Stephen Moore took control from there, limiting the Tigers to just one hit in the final four innings. Improving to 4-0 on the year, Moore went the distance, giving up just one run on four hits while striking out six.
Keelan Smithers took the loss, giving up three runs on 10 hits. Striking out five in 6.0 innings of work, Smithers issued a pair of walks.
Asher Lee-Tyson and Brett Geren each finished 1-for-2, while Belski and Arendt went 1-for-3. Saile was 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Trent and Lowe each hit 2-for-3.
GAME 2: PRINCETON 3, NAVY 2
Digging itself out of an early 2-0 hole, Princeton tied the game in the top of the fifth before pushing across the game winner on a Danny Hoy double in the ninth.
Staking the Midshipmen to an early lead, Saile tripled to rightfield, bringing home Blue, who led off the bottom of the first with a walk. Later in the inning, Connor Deneen singled to left to plate Saile.
Helping the Tigers get a run back in the second, Tyler Servais hammered a one-out double. Singling up the middle, Mat DeNunzio drove in Princeton's first run. In the top of the fifth, Arendt ripped a leadoff triple into right center. Hoy followed with a fly-ball to right, allowing Arendt to score the tying run.
Still tied in the top of the ninth, Arendt singled through the left side, putting runners on first and second with one out. Once again coming up with a big at-bat, Hoy doubled down the leftfield line, scoring the go-ahead run.
Sticking with Chris Bodurian in the bottom half of the frame, the junior lefty pitched around a leadoff single and two-out walk to secure the win. Bodurian tossed three shutout innings in relief, giving up just two hits. Nick Brady also turned in an impressive start, surrendering just two runs on six hits in 6.0 innings.
Arendt went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Hoy finished 1-for-4 with two RBI. DeNunzio was 3-for-4, while Belski, Nick Hernandez and Servais each notched a hit.
