Fifth-Ranked Men's Lightweights Open Season With Victory Over #8 Georgetown
March 28, 2015 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
SEASON PREVIEW
The fifth-ranked Princeton men's lightweight rowing team retained the Fosburgh Cup and made the most of its lone Cup race on Lake Carnegie in Saturday's season opener. Princeton dealt with a strong headwind and chilly weather to post a winning time of 6:34.9, 20 seconds faster than its Georgetown opponent.
Princeton won each of the top three varsity races. The Tigers 2V won in 6:32.2, which was 36 seconds faster than the Hoyas, while the 3V won in 7:02.4. That race was tight at the midway point, but Georgetown caught a crab midway through and could never get back in contention.
It was a good result for a Princeton boat ranked only three spots ahead of Georgetown in the preseason national poll. The Tigers can make another statement next Saturday when they head to Annapolis to take on both No. 3 Columbia and No. 7 Navy in the Murtaugh Cup.
"The guys did a good job rowing in some very challenging conditions," head coach Marty Crotty said. "I doubt there was much about the rowing that felt very good, but I'm sure they felt ok with the results. We have a really tough schedule coming up with travel to Annapolis, Ithaca, Philly, and derby on consecutive weekends so today won't be the only time the guys have to deal with a little discomfort."
