PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University baseball team returns to action this weekend with a four-game set against the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
Due to a combination of inclement weather and resulting field conditions, the Tigers' weekend set has been altered from its original Friday-Saturday-Sunday schedule.
Princeton and UNC-Greensboro will now play a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 7-8. Saturday's twinbill will begin at 1 p.m., with Sunday's doubleheader scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
THE WEEK THAT WAS
• Princeton opened its 2015 campaign with three losses to No. 4 LSU at Alex Box Stadium.
• The Tigers dropped the opening game of the series 3-2 before getting outscored 22-6 in a doubleheader last Saturday.
• In Friday's season opener, Chad Powers pitched five strong innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on just two hits.
• Nick Donatiello and Chris Bodurian combined for three shutout innings in relief, surrendering a pair of base-knocks.
• Trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh, Princeton put runners on second and third with one out but was unable to push the tying run across the plate.
• On Saturday, Paul Tupper went 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored in the first game of the doubleheader (L, 7-2), while Powers went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
• Nick Hernandez was 2-for-4 in the second game of the twinbill (L, 15-4), while Peter Owens finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
FAST START
• Chad Powers enjoyed a solid opening weekend, throwing five solid innings in the team's season opener, before playing third base for the Tigers in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader.
• On Friday night, Powers gave up just one earned run (three runs overall) on just two hits, while striking out five.
• Seeing time at third base the following afternoon, Powers was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
• Hitting .400 in his first three games, Peter Owens notched four hits in 10 at-bats with a .455 on-base percentage to earn a spot on the Ivy League honor roll.
• Paul Tupper hit .333 against LSU with a double, RBI and run scored.
• Nick Hernandez, Billy Arendt and Danny Hoy each had three hits on the weekend, combining for four RBI.
• Arendt belted the Tigers' first homer of the year with a solo shot in the sixth inning of Friday's season opener against LSU. Hoy had a pair of doubles.
• Zack Belski, Hernandez, Hoy, Tupper and Powers hit a combined 0.750 (6-8) with runners in scoring position during opening weekend. Hoy and Powers each had a pair of two-out RBI.
IN RELIEF
• Nick Donatiello and Chris Bodurian combined for three scoreless innings in Friday's opener, giving up just two hits.
• Tyler Foote pitched three scoreless innings in relief in the first game of Saturday's twinbill, allowing just two hits.
• Chris Giglio and Kevin Thomsen did not surrender an earned run in three innings of work in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, combining for five strikeouts.
ROAD WARRIORS
• Including last weekend's three-game set at No. 4 LSU, Princeton will play its first 17 games away from Clarke Field.
• After a pair of series against UNC-Greensboro (Mar. 6-8) and Maryland (Mar. 13-15), the Tigers face ECU (Mar. 17-18), Navy (Mar. 20-22) and Seton Hall (Mar. 24).
• The Orange and Black will open their home and league schedule on Mar. 28-29 with a pair of doubleheaders against Brown and Yale.
SCOUTING UNC-GREENSBORO
• Princeton is 3-15 all-time against UNC-Greensboro entering this weekend's series.
• Last season, the Tigers went 1-2 in a three-game set against the Spartans.
• The Orange and Black dropped the first game 11-10 in 12 innings before falling 11-1 in the second. Princeton avoided the sweep with an 11-1 (8 inn.) win in the finale.
• UNC-Greensboro enters this weekend's competition with a 2-7 record, having dropped each of its last five games after a 2-2 start.
• On Wednesday night, the Spartans fell to Wake Forest, 11-7.
• Opening its season at home against High Point on Feb. 13, UNCG will return to Greensboro for the first time in three weeks, having played its last eight on the road.
• Through their first nine games, the Spartans are hitting .235 with a .310 on-base percentage.
• Zac MacAneney is the only UNCG player to hit above .300 so far this season, batting .343 with a double, two RBI, six runs scored and a .425 OBP.
• Tyler Long is hitting .297 with six runs scored and a team-high eight RBI, while Devin Rulz is batting .273 with a pair of doubles.
• Eric Kalbfleisch and Collin Woody have combined for six doubles in nine appearances apiece, with nine runs scored a triple and a home run.
• Despite posting a 1.17 earned run average in 15.1 innings spread across three appearances, Brennen James is 0-2 on the season.
• Recording a team-high 10 strikeouts, James has held the opposition to a .230 batting average.
• Ryan Clark leads the Spartans in innings pitched (16.1), going 1-1 in his three starts with a 4.96 ERA.
• Keaton Haack, Andrew Wantz and Collin Woody have combined for 6.0 shutout innings in relief, surrendering just two hits while striking out five.
