GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Princeton University baseball team split the first of two weekend doubleheaders against the University of North Carolina-Greensboro to move to 1-4 on the season.
Dropping the first game of the twinbill, 12-3, Princeton scored early and often in the nightcap en route to a 14-9 victory. The Tigers and Spartans will put the wraps on their four-game set with another doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 8 beginning at 11 a.m.
GAME 1: UNCG 12, PRINCETON 3 (7 innings)
Held scoreless in the first, UNCG pushed across a run in each of its final five frames en route to a 12-3 win. Plating four runs in both the bottom of the second and bottom of the sixth, the Spartans combined for four more in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Chad Powers fell to 0-2 on the season after surrendering seven runs (three earned) over four innings. Recording three strikeouts, Powers allowed nine hits. Chris Giglio pitched two innings in relief, giving up five runs on six hits.
Billy Arendt finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Zack Belski went 2-for-3 with a walk. Tyler Servais, Peter Owens and Cody Phillips accounted for the rest of the Tigers' seven hits.
The Spartans' Ryan Clark allowed just one run on four hits in six innings. Striking out 10 batters while issuing three walks, Clark improved to 2-1 on the season. Chad Sykes gave up two runs on three hits in an inning of work.
Aaron Wright paced a UNCG offense that racked up 15 hits, going 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Zac MacAneney and Collin Woody each homered, combining for four hits and four RBI.
Breaking through in the bottom of the second, the Spartans scored a pair of runs on a Princeton fielding error before MacAneney brought around two more with a two-out RBI double. The Tigers got one back in the top of the third on an Arendt double to left center that scored Phillips, but Hunter King singled in a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 5-1.
Trailing 12-1 in the top of the seventh, Princeton plated a pair of runs. Owens led off the inning with a single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. A Phillips double then put runners on second and third. With one out, Arendt singled in his second RBI of the contest. Another wild pitch from Sykes later allowed Phillips to come home, wrapping up the scoring.
GAME 2: PRINCETON 14, UNCG 9
Pounding out 17 hits, Princeton held onto a 14-9 victory in the nightcap to notch its first win of the 2015 season.
Staking the Tigers to an early lead, Zack Belski laced a two-out single to right in the top of the first inning to plate Danny Hoy. After UNCG tied it with a run in the bottom of the second, Princeton pushed across five runs in the third on five hits.
Chad Powers and Billy Arendt got things started with back-to-back singles before Hoy laid down a bunt single to load the bases. After Powers scored on a Belski groundout to second, Nick Hernandez drew a walk to once again load the bases. Stretching the Tiger lead, Paul Tupper belted a grand slam over the left field wall to make it 5-1.
The following inning Princeton added two runs on a Belski RBI fielder's choice and a Hernandez base-knock to left that scored Arendt. Looking for more, the Tigers tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth. With one out and the bases loaded, Arendt lifted a sacrifice to center, allowing Peter Owens, who led off the frame with a single, to score. Hoy then ripped a double down the leftfield line, plating a pair of Tigers to extend the margin to 11-1.
Trimming the Princeton lead to just three, UNCG plated seven runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks in part to a two-RBI double from Jake Hall and a triple from Zac MacAneney that plated three runs. Continuing to cut into the Tiger lead in the seventh, Aaron Wright scored on a balk after doubling down the left field line and moving to third on a sacrifice fly.
Adding some insurance, Princeton plated three runs in the ninth. Drawing a lead off walk, Owens advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. With runners on the corners after a walk to Blake Thomsen, Mat DeNunzio singled up the middle to bring in Owens. With two outs, Belski came up with a two-out hit, driving in the game's final two runs.
Hoy and Belski went a combined 6-for-10 from the plate with seven RBI and two runs scored. Owens was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs, while Arendt went 2-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Keelan Smithers picked up the run, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits in four innings. Chris Bodurian tossed four innings, tallying four strikeouts, while Nick Donatiello threw one shutout inning, allowing one hit.
