Princeton Baseball Suffers 9-1 Setback Against Regional Rival St. John's
April 16, 2015 | Baseball
QUEENS, N.Y. – Despite taking an early lead, the Princeton University baseball team dropped its fourth-straight game, falling to regional rival St. John's University at Jack Kaiser Stadium, 9-1.
Getting to St. John's starter Kevin Magee in the top of the second, Princeton put two aboard thanks to a Peter Owens bunt single and a Nick Hernandez blooper to center. After Tyler Servais advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, Paul Tupper lifted a fly ball to left that allowed Owens to come home.
Coming right back in the bottom of the frame, the Red Storm scored three runs on three hits. After Princeton starter Tyler Foote hit Robbie Knightes to start the inning, Matt Harris singled to left to put two aboard.
With Jarred Mederos bunting, a charging Chad Powers fielded the would-be sacrifice on the left side of the infield, but could not make the throw to first after hurdling a sliding Foote, loading the bases. Troy Dixon followed with a grounder to short that allowed the first SJU run to score. Following a Tyler Sanchez walk, Alex Caruso dumped a base-knock into left center just beyond the reach of a diving Owens, plating two more runs.
Looking to add to the lead in the fourth, Dixon and Robert Wayman notched back-to-back singles with one out. Sanchez promptly doubled into the left centerfield gap to plate a pair of runs that made it 5-1. Coming in to pitch for Foote, Chris Bodurian unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Sanchez to move to third. Bringing in the Red Storm's sixth run, Caruso lifted a sacrifice fly into center.
After Bodurian walked Michael Donadio, Zach Lauricella singled to left to put two on. Stopping a comebacker to the mound with his foot, Bodurian looked to make the final out at first, but his throw pulled Zack Belski off the bag, allowing Donadio to score. Harris then dropped a bloop single just inside the leftfield line to cap off a six-run St. John's fourth that extended the margin to 9-1.
Hernandez finished 2-for-3, while Owens was 1-for-3. Foote took the loss, giving up six runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. Bodurian, Chris Giglio and Nick Donatiello combined to pitch 4.2 shutout innings, allowing four hits.
