Tennis Tuesday: New Rankings Today, Selections Next Week
April 21, 2015 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
The Princeton tennis teams are off from competition this weekend, but that doesn't mean there's no news.
New Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings came out Tuesday, putting the Princeton men at No. 36 and the women at No. 43. While the Princeton women know they're in, thanks to the Tigers having won the Ivy League's automatic bid, the men have to wait until next Tuesday's selection announcement. The ranking bodes well, however, as the lowest-ranked team to get an at-large bid last year was Michigan at No. 43, and the highest-ranked team to be left out was Dartmouth at No. 42.
Princeton is the third-highest ranked Ivy team on the ITA's April 21 list, behind No. 20 Columbia and No. 34 Harvard. The only time the Ivy has gotten three teams in to the NCAA men's tennis tournament was 1998 when those same three teams made it. That was also the last time Princeton advanced to the tennis dance.
The Ivy men have a total of five teams ranked, with Dartmouth at No. 46 and Cornell at No. 49.
Also ranked for the Tigers are senior Zack McCourt, who ranked 79th in singles, and McCourt and sophomore Tom Colautti, who return to the doubles list at No. 48. It's the highest McCourt has ranked in singles all spring, since he was ranked 71st for the fall season.
The women are headed back to the NCAAs for the sixth time after winning their 12th Ivy League title. It's the second time Princeton will be at the NCAAs for a second straight year (2009, 2010), but the first time after having won a match the previous year. Princeton, then ranked No. 47, upset No. 25 Arizona State in the first round of the NCAAs and came within two third sets of knocking off No. 2 Alabama on the Crimson Tide's home courts.
The Ivy also has five ranked women's teams, with Dartmouth at No. 31, Princeton at No. 43, Columbia at No. 45, Brown at No. 65 and Yale at No. 74.
The NCAA selections will take place April 28 and will be streamed at NCAA.com, with the women at 5 p.m. ET and the men following at 5:30 p.m.
