PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University baseball team closed out its 2015 home schedule by splitting a doubleheader with Cornell University on Senior Day at Clarke Field.
Behind a stellar pitching performance from Chad Powers, the Tigers took game one, 1-0, before dropping a 13-4 decision in the nightcap. The series now shifts to Ithaca, N.Y. where the Tigers and Big Red will close out the regular season with another twinbill on Sunday, Apr. 26. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
GAME 1: PRINCETON 1, CORNELL 0
With Princeton starter Chad Powers retiring the first eight batters, Frankie Padulo doubled down the leftfield line to give Cornell its first base runner. Reaching on an error, JD Whetzel put runners on the corners with two outs. Bearing down, Powers got Dan Morris to ground out to second to end the threat.
Still tied in the bottom of the sixth, Tyler Servais legged out an infield single to short. Advancing the runner, Danny Baer laid down a sacrifice bunt toward third. With one out, Billy Arendt came up with a clutch hit, driving in Servais with a single to leftfield.
Hoping to jumpstart a Cornell rally in the seventh, Tommy Wagner led off the frame with a base-knock to center. With Powers striking out Ryan Karl, Brett Geren came up throwing to catch Wagner stealing. Powers then got Dale Wickham to pop up to short to end the game.
Turning in his best start of the season, Powers went the distance, giving up just four hits, while fanning two. Arendt finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Asher Lee-Tyson, Paul Tupper and Servais accounted for the rest of Princeton's five hits.
Cornell starter Kellen Urbon was nearly as good in the loss, surrendering just one run on five hits with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Wagner was 2-for-3, while Wickham and Padulo had the Big Red's only other hits.
GAME 2: CORNELL 13, PRINCETON 4
With Princeton unable to push anyone across with runners on the corners and one out in the bottom of the first, Cornell broke through with three runs on four hits in the top of the second. Tommy Wagner got the rally started with a one-out single up the middle before advancing to second on a wild pitch.
After Ryan Karl hammered an RBI double into the left centerfield gap, Frankie Padulo doubled down the leftfield line to make it 2-0. With Padulo moving to third on a groundout to first, Ellis Bitner dumped an RBI single into right to extend the lead.
With one out and runners on the corners the following frame, Wagner lifted a sacrifice to left that allowed Dan Morris to come home. After Karl reached on an error, Padulo again doubled down the leftfield line to up the Cornell lead to 5-0.
Looking to kick-start a rally, Danny Hoy doubled to left center to lead off the Princeton third. With Hoy on third after a fly out, Nick Hernandez belted a two-run shot over the rightfield wall to trim the Big Red margin to three.
Blowing the game open in the fourth, Cornell pushed across five runs with two outs. Morris and Kevin Tatum got things started by drawing back-to-back walks. Two-straight Princeton errors would allow Morris and Tatum to come around before Karl ripped an RBI single into right. Padulo singled in another run before Karl scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-2.
Nick Brady took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in 3.0 innings. Paul Balestrieri picked up his first win of the season, giving up four runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work. Mat DeNunzio finished 3-for-4 to lead the Tiger offense, while Tupper was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Padulo was 4-for-4 with three RBI, while Karl and Bitar each finished 3-for-5 with two RBI. Managing just four hits in game one, the Big Red pounded out 14 hits in the second game of the twinbill.
