WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Playing through a steady wind and light rain, the Princeton University baseball team dropped a mid-week tilt to instate rival Monmouth University, 14-1.
Opening the scoring, Monmouth got to Princeton starter Chris Giglio in the bottom of the second. With a runner on second, Robbie Alessandrine got things started by drawing the first of three consecutive walks that would eventually see Kyle Perry touch home. Limiting the damage, Giglio got Steve Wilgus to hit a hard grounder to second to end the inning.
The following inning, the Hawks tacked on a pair of runs. With one out, Chris Gaetano hammered a double off of the leftfield wall. Perry followed with a sharply hit groundball past a diving Chad Powers at third, scoring Gaetano. After stealing second, Perry moved to third on an errant Giglio pick-off throw. Ryan Bailey then lifted a sacrifice to left to make it 3-0.
With the Tigers leaving a runner stranded on third in the top of the fourth, Monmouth extended its lead with two more runs in the bottom of the frame. Following a Justin Trochiano single up the middle, Christian Holland drew a walk to put two aboard. After a hit batsman loaded the bases, Shaine Hughes dropped a bloop single into left to plate two runs.
Looking to add to the Monmouth tally in the sixth, Wilgus tripled into the rightfield corner. Hughes promptly dumped a single into shallow right, scoring the Hawks' sixth run. Once again coming up with a runner in scoring position the following inning, Hughes poked a two-out RBI single into left before Gaetano belted a three-run shot over the rightfield wall to make it 10-0.
Plating the Tigers' only run of the afternoon, Billy Arendt homered with two outs in the top of the eighth. Peter Owens then singled to center, but Zack Belski grounded out to second to end the inning. Managing just four hits, Princeton finished just 1-for-10 with runners on base and 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
Arendt and Owens each finished 1-for-3, while Belski and Servais were 1-for-4. Giglio took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in 3.0 innings with four strikeouts and five walks.
Monmouth starter Frank Trimarco earned the win, allowing just two hits with seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Hughes was 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Perry and Wilgus each drove in a pair of runs while combining for three hits. Gaetano was 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI.
Princeton returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 11 with a doubleheader against Columbia beginning at 1 p.m.
