Seven Princeton Rowers Earn Acceptances To Under-23 National Selection Camp
May 12, 2015 | Heavyweight Rowing, Women's Rowing - Open
Though they are currently in preparation for their upcoming championship weekends, seven Princeton rowers now have plans for their summers as well. Five men and two women from the Tiger rowing teams have been accepted to the 2015 U.S. Under 23 National Team Selection Camps.
The total could rise to eight, as senior Emily Burr is one of five women on the wait list for the women's camp.
If Burr is accepted, she will join teammates Erin Reelick and Meghan Wheeler at the women's camp, which will be held in Princeton. The camp will select the women's eight, four and quadruple sculls crews that will compete July 22-26 at the 2015 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The camp will also select a women's pair to compete June 21-24 at the Under 23 World Championships Trials in West Windsor, N.J.
Both Reelick and Wheeler were members of the U.S. team that competed in the 2014 U23 World Championships in Varese, Italy. Reelick won gold medals with both the 8+ and the 4-, while Wheeler competed in the 4x.
Five of the eight men who will likely comprise the second-seeded Princeton heavyweight varsity eight at Lake Quinsigamond this weekend were chosen for the men's camp, which will be held in Charlottesville, Va. Seniors Jamie Hamp and Jameson Pesce, juniors Patrick Eble and Patrick Konttinen and sophomore Nick Mead will all represent Princeton at the camp.
Pesce is the coxswain for the varsity boat, which went 8-1 this season and is ranked fourth nationally, while the other four have rowed in the boat every weekend this season. It is possible they could see their other boatmates in Bulgaria, as the other four are all international students.
Both Hamp and Konttinen competed in the 8+ in Italy last summer, where the duo won bronze.
