Open Rowing Qualifies For 19th Consecutive NCAA Championships Regatta
May 19, 2015 | Women's Rowing - Open
You can't do any better than that.
The Princeton open rowing team remained one of three collegiate programs to be invited to every NCAA Championships regatta since the inaugural event in 1997 when it received one of the 11 at-large bids to the 2015 Championships, which will be held at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif., May 29-31.
Princeton, which has been ranked in the Top 10 all year, will send three boats to California, including two that earned medals at Sunday's Ivy League Championships. The varsity eight and the varsity four each earned bronze, while the second varsity eight finished fourth to miss the medal stand by one place.
“We're thrilled to return to the NCAA Championships,” said head coach Lori Dauphiny, who guided Princeton boats to V8 NCAA gold medals in both 2006 and 2011. “Our team has worked very hard all year for this opportunity, and competing in the Ivy League, as well as against the likes of Virginia, Michigan and USC, will help prepare us to race against the best teams in the country."
While Brown earned the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAAs, Princeton, Harvard and Yale each earned at-large bids. USC and Michigan, both of which Princeton defeated on Lake Carnegie this season, also earned at-large bids, while Virginia claimed the ACC automatic bid.
Both the Tiger varsity eight and the varsity four will be seeded ninth in their respective classes, while the second varsity will be seeded 14th.
Princeton has placed in the Top 5 as a team in nine NCAA Championships, including four times in the past five seasons.
