Matheson '08 Closes Fourth Women's World Cup with Canada
June 28, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Twelve years apart, both of Canada's trips to the quarterfinals of the FIFA Women's World Cup have come with Diana Matheson '08 on the squad.
The Princeton alumna closed her fourth Women's World Cup tournament Saturday night with host Canada coming up just short against England, 2-1, in a quarterfinal match in Vancouver. Matheson, who had been recovering from a torn ACL suffered last October, made her first appearance in this year's tournament when she entered in the 62nd minute.
In her first Women's World Cup back in 2003, Matheson started all six games for Canada, which beat China in the quarterfinals before Sweden defeated the Canadians in the semis. Matheson had started all 12 Women's World Cup games in which she had played entering this year's tournament. Saturday's game was her 167th appearance for Canada, the second-most in team history.
During her career at Princeton, Matheson was a four-time first-team All-Ivy League honoree, a first-team All-America selection in 2004 while helping Princeton to the NCAA College Cup semifinals and winning the Ivy League Rookie of the Year award, and was the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2007. She graduated as Princeton's all-time career assist leader, with 26, and graduated fifth in career goals (26) and fourth in career points (78).
