September 18, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
BOX SCORES: Princeton 3, Duquesne 0 l Princeton 3, Rutgers 0
Head coach Sabrina King wanted to see her squad head into the Ivy League season with momentum. She couldn't have asked for much more than she got during Day 1 of the Rutgers Tournament, as Princeton swept both Duquesne and Rutgers in impressive fashion.
Princeton will look to win the tournament Saturday when it takes on Howard at 10:30 am in the College Ave Gym. You can get live stats for the match here.
PRINCETON 3, DUQUESNE 0
Though Princeton was pushed in the opening set, the Tigers offensive efficiency was too much for Duquesne to handle in the final two. The Tigers grabbed their third win of the season 25-21, 25-13, 25-14 at the College Ave Gym at Rutgers.
Junior Cara Mattaliano led Princeton with 13 kills and 11 digs, and she hit .429 (13-1-28) during the match. Incredibly, three starters actually ended up with a higher hitting percentage, including classmate Brittany Ptak (.647), who had 11 kills on 17 swings without an error. Senior Kendall Peterkin (.450) had 10 kills, while freshman middle Nnenna Ibe (.556) had six kills and six blocks.
Senior Sarah Daschbach had 16 digs, while junior Lauren Miller had 26 assists and six digs. The Tigers hit at least .500 in each of the last two sets, and that followed a match last weekend when they hit at least .400 in all three sets of a win over Hartford.
PRINCETON 3, RUTGERS 0
There may have been a couple more errors, but Princeton was even more dominant in the nightcap against the local Big Ten rival. The Tigers never trailed in two of the three sets and limited Rutgers to a .032 hitting percentage in a 25-14, 25-13, 25-14 win over the Scarlet Knights.
Peterkin and Mattaliano picked up right where they left off, with both recording double-digit kills and hitting at least .500 in the win. Mattaliano had 10 kills and nine digs, while Peterkin had 12 kills and five blocks in the win. The middle duo of Ptak (eight) and Ibe (four) combined for 12 kills while hitting only two errors, and sophomore outside Kelly Matthews added four kills of her own.
The setting duo of Lauren Miller (17) and Claire Nussbaum (15) provided a balanced effort en route to 32 assists and a .393 hitting percentage. Daschbach added 14 digs in the win.
Rutgers is the first team Princeton has faced this season that has also played 2014 Ivy League co-champions Harvard and Yale this season as well. Harvard topped Rutgers in three tight sets (22, 22, 23), while Yale won 3-1, but held comfortable advantages in two of its three wins.
