No. 12 Men's Water Polo Holds Off UC-San Diego; Falls to UC-Davis

STANFORD, Calif. – The 12th-ranked Princeton University men's water polo team placed 10th at Stanford University's Kap 7 NorCal Invitational after splitting a pair of games against UC-San Diego and UC-Davis.
Edging out UCSD 12-9 to start the day, the Tigers suffered a 10-7 loss at the hands of UC-Davis in the tournament's ninth-place game. Princeton returns to action and opens CWPA play against Johns Hopkins on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Staking the Tigers to an early lead, Ryan Wilson netted a pair of goals in the game's first 4:27. With UCSD tying the game at 2-2 in the second quarter, Bradley Wachtell momentarily broke the deadlock with a go-ahead goal at 4:57. With the game once again tied at 4-4 in the latter stages of the first half, Michael Swart gave Princeton a 5-4 edge with a goal with just 25 seconds on the clock.
Extending the Tigers' lead early in the third quarter, Thomas Nelson and Jordan Colina netted a pair of goals just 28 seconds apart. With UCSD back within one at 7-6, Wilson netted his third of the game inside of the one-minute mark to give Princeton a two-goal cushion. Ahead 11-9 with just under two minutes to go in regulation, Jovan Jeremic capped off the scoring with a tally at 1:59.
Wilson and Jeremic each netted three goals, with Wilson also nabbing five steals. Swart had two goals, an assist and a steal, while Nelson scored twice and drew four ejections. Wachtell and Colina accounted for the Tigers' other two goals.
Making two saves in the first eight minutes, Mitrovic turned away five shots in the second quarter. Recording five more saves in the third, he tacked on two more stops in the final frame to finish with 14.

Putting the Tigers on the board in the early going, Jordan Colina netted the game's first goal just over a minute after the opening sprint. Doubling the Princeton margin, Michael Swart made it 2-0 at 4:21.
After three unanswered UC-Davis goals, Swart momentarily pulled the Orange and Black even with 1:04 left in the first half, but an Aggie score just eight seconds later gave UC-Davis a slim lead at the intermission.
With the Aggies tacking on a pair of goals early in the third, Colina notched the Tigers' first score of the second half at 4:59. Two minutes later, Bret Hinrichs found the back of the UC-Davis cage to pull Princeton back within one.
Trailing 8-6 to start the final frame, Swart put in his third of the game to trim the Tigers' deficit to one. Coming right back, the Aggies netted a pair of goals over the next four minutes to seal the victory.
