Prchal, Men's Golf Take Titles at Cornell Invitational
September 20, 2015 | Men's Golf
The Princeton men's golf program has been around since before the turn of the century -- 19th to 20th, that is.
And while it's true that multi-team events didn't become the majority of Princeton's schedule until the late 1980s, with two-team duals becoming less frequent, the Tigers managed to do something this month that has never happened in nearly 120 years of program history.
Following up last week's Navy Fall Classic title, the Tigers took the Cornell Invitational win Sunday in Ithaca, marking the first time Princeton has opened its schedule with wins in two multi-team events.
"It doesn't tell us a whole lot just yet," Will Green, the J. Stuart Francis '74 Head Coach of Men's Golf, said. "Certainly, it's a tremendous accomplishment and we're very proud, but the season is long and there are tournaments with very good fields ahead of us."
Princeton had a nine-stroke lead after Saturday's two rounds and opened it to a 16-shot lead over runner-up Towson after Sunday's final round. The growth in that lead is thanks in big part to Quinn Prchal, who won medalist honors for the first time since taking last year's Ivy League Championship individual title at Saucon Valley in Pennsylvania.
As a team, Princeton finished a single stroke short of the title at the last Ivy Championship, a result that has helped fuel the strong start.
"We have another year of experience, a year of maturity, a year of thinking of that one shot we missed at Ivies," Green said. "Everyone put his full attention and focus on improving, and I think knowing that we had the entire team returning encouraged everyone about what we could accomplish. We all know we have the ability to put together a special year, but we also know it doesn't just happen without hard work and continued focus."
Prchal posted a 68 Sunday, the lowest round on a day in which only one other player, Colgate's Ryan Allison (69) turned in a score lower than 70. Prchal's score was one off the tournament low round of 67 Saturday from Towson's Jimmy Grem, who finished at 2-under, three shots back of Prchal to claim runner-up honors.
Princeton will head right back out to the links next weekend, playing in the Windon Memorial hosted by Northwestern.
