Lussi, Asom Capture Ivy Weekly Awards, National Recognition
September 21, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Two wins, including one over an NSCAA-ranked William & Mary team, propelled Tyler Lussi and Mimi Asom to the Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week awards for women's soccer.
Lussi had two goals and an assist and Asom had a goal in Princeton's 4-1 win over La Salle last Wednesday and she followed that with the team's first goal in a 2-1 win over No. 23 William & Mary Sunday.
Asom had a goal in each game on the week, including the golden goal in the second minute of overtime to beat William & Mary. It was Princeton's first golden goal at Roberts Stadium since 2009, first win over a ranked team since 2012 and first win over a ranked team in Princeton since 2004.
The Player of the Week award is the first for Princeton since Vanessa Gregoire had the Ivy's first award of the season this fall, and the Rookie of the Week award is Princeton's first since Gregoire won Oct. 27 of last year. Lussi has previously won three Ivy Player of the Week awards, Oct. 13 and Oct. 27 of last year and Sept. 9, 2013. She also won three Ivy Rookie of the Week honors two seasons ago.
Both players were also mentioned by Top Drawer Soccer in that Web site's Women's Team of the Week announcement. Asom was one of the 11 to make the cut for the Team of the Week while Lussi was one of nine more included as honorable mention. Asom also earned recognition on the National Primetime Performers Honor Roll at CollegeSoccer360.com.
Lussi has a team-best six goals on the season, two more than Asom's four, and has 34 goals on her Princeton career. She's two back of Jen Hoy '13 for fourth on Princeton's all-time career list.
The Tigers, who have bounced back from a three-game losing streak to win three in a row to close the pre-conference season, will host Yale Saturday at 4 p.m. to open Ivy League play.
