PRINCETON, N.J. (9/3/15) - The Princeton men's soccer team begins the 2015 season on Friday, Sept. 4 when it travels to St. John's for an 8 p.m., game live on ESPN3.
The teams played to a scoreless tie last year in Princeton, to extend the Johnnies' unbeaten streak in the series to 4-0-3. The Tigers won the first meeting in 1995.
St. John's is 0-2 on the season after dropping two games at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic at Indiana last weekend. After falling 1-0 to No. 14 Indiana, the Red Storm dropped a 4-0 game to No. 13 Maryland. During the preseason, St. John's tied Manhattan – in an exhibition held before the Princeton team even arrived on campus – and then lost a 1-0 game to Penn State. St. John's is allowing 22.5 shots per game and has had seven itself. Freshmen Mike Prosuk and Filippo Ricupati have the most shots on the team, combining for nine. Redshirt freshman Andrew Withers has a .722 save percentage and a 2.50 goals against average in goal. St. John's went 4-10-4 last year and returns nine of 20 letterwinners, including four starters, while bringing in 15 newcomers.
Princeton is coming off of an 11-3-3 season and an Ivy League co-championship. The Tigers were the only team in the nation to end the season on a nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1) but did not receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Offensively the team will have to replace the NCAA leader in points and goals per game, Montreal's Cameron Porter. Porter scored 15 of the team's 34 goals last season. Thomas Sanner, Brendan McSherry and Nico Hurtado are the top-returning scorers with 19, 10 and eight points respectively. First-team all-Ivy League defender Josh Miller will help captain the team, along with first-team all-Ivy midfielder McSherry. Also returning is Ivy League honorable mention goalkeeper Ben Hummel. Hummel went 11-3-3 last year with a 1.30 GAA and a .744 save percentage. To hear more about this year's team, watch the season preview video interview with head coach Jim Barlow.
