Princeton Ends Three-Match Big Ten Run With Win Over Iowa, 6-1
January 30, 2016 | Men's Tennis
The final of a three-match swing through the Big Ten went Princeton's way Sunday evening at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York with the 34th-ranked Tigers knocking off the 64th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes 6-1.
Princeton faced Wisconsin in Madison earlier in the week and then faced Michigan Friday in the first of its two matches in the Ivy-Big Ten Challenge, an event that involves Cornell as well as Princeton, Iowa and Michigan.
Princeton fought back from a loss on court two to take the doubles point with a win from Alex Day and Luke Gamble on court one and the clincher from Tom Colautti and Josh Yablon on court three.
In singles play, Diego Vives contributed the second overall point atop the ladder before Iowa pulled to within 2-1 with a three-set win on court two. The Tigers then completed the sweep, with wins from Alex Day and Jonathan Carcione putting Princeton over the top before Josh Yablon and Jimmy Wasserman completed the 6-1 final.
Princeton will open its home schedule with doubleheaders each day Saturday and Sunday, first against Navy and Georgetown and then against NJIT and Buffalo. Matches will start at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Jadwin Gym both days.

Coach Billy Pate on the match: "We had a great physical and emotional effort top to bottom against a good Iowa team. Like yesterday, the final score does not reflect how close the match was. We were fortunate to claw our way to the doubles point. I liked our resiliency and ability to make things happen as we were down a break on each of the doubles courts. The bottom half of our singles lineup really helped make things easier today by getting off to good starts as the top three courts were engaged in rough battles. "Though we would certainly like to have had a bit better week overall, this was a very challenging schedule to start the year. Our goal is to constantly challenge ourselves and give our athletes the chance to play against some of the best teams nationally. Though we'll fall down occasionally, it will make us stronger and prepare us for greater opportunities as we improve and the season moves on. We'll get back to work this week in preparation for our first home matches next weekend." |
