Volleyball Runs Win Streak To 10, Readies For Crucial Home Showdown vs. Yale
October 14, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Cara Mattaliano led all players with 12 kills and helped the first-place Princeton women's volleyball team run its win streak to 10 matches Friday night with a 25-16, 25-10, 25-23 over Brown.
The win sets up a major showdown Saturday night in Dillon Gym, as Princeton (12-3, 6-0 Ivy) will host Yale (12-3, 5-1) at 5 pm on the Ivy League Digital Network. If Princeton wins, it will enter the second half of the Ivy League season with at least a two-match lead over every other team in the league; if Yale wins, both teams would share first place with seven matches remaining.
Besides improving its match win streak, the Tigers have now won 16 consecutive sets, though Brown made Princeton work at the end. After dominant performances in the first two sets, Princeton found itself down 18-15 in the third. A service ace by reigning Ivy Rookie of the Week Jessie Harris, followed by a Mattaliano kill, ignited a 10-5 run to close the match.
Freshman Maggie O'Connell recorded 12 kills, four digs and three blocks, while classmate Devon Peterkin added 14 digs and six kills. Mattaliano was the leader on both sides of the court. She had a match-high 19 digs, and her 13 kills leaves her only 21 kills short of the 1000-mark for her career.
