Princeton Completes Perfect Ivy First Half, Sweeps Yale To Extend Win Streak To 11
October 15, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team won't need any reminders that big comebacks can happen in the Ivy League. The Tigers can look up at their championship banner as a reminder of what remains possible with seven league matches remaining.
That being said, they like this position much more than they did one year earlier.
Princeton, which went 3-4 in the first half of the 2015 season before roaring back to share the Ivy crown, completed a 7-0 start to league play this season with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 home victory over Yale Saturday evening in Dillon Gym. The Tigers now hold at least a two-match lead on everybody else in the league, and they have won 19 consecutive sets in Ivy play, including all 12 at home.
Freshman Maggie O'Connell, the MVP of a Rutgers Tournament that helped Princeton get rolling into Ivy play, led all Tigers with 13 kills, and she hit .370 in the win. Senior Cara Mattaliano, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, added 10 kills, and she will head into next Friday's home match against Penn needing only 11 to become the 13th player in program history with 1,000 career kills.
Freshman Jessie Harris paced the offense with 33 assists, and she added eight digs, four kills and three blocks. Junior Kelly Matthews had 16 digs, while senior middle Brittany Ptak added seven kills and three blocks.
Princeton will complete a three-match homestand next Friday night against Penn; the Quakers gave Princeton its toughest match of the Ivy season to date, a 3-2 thriller at the Palestra Sept. 24.
