Mattaliano Records 1000th Kill, Paces Volleyball To 3-0 Win Over Penn, 12th Straight Victory
October 21, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Cara Mattaliano, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year and two-time reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, became the 13th player in program history to record 1,000 kills while leading the first-place Tigers to a dominant 3-0 win over Penn Friday night at Dillon Gym. The win, Princeton's 12th straight on the season, keeps the Tigers two matches up on the Ivy field with six to play.
Mattaliano posted a match-high 14 kills, the 11th of which sent Mattaliano into the 1,000-kill category, and added eight digs, a block and a service ace in the 25-18, 25-16, 25-17 victory. She was hardly the only impressive Tiger hitter; freshman rightside Maggie O'Connell, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week, added 10 kills, while classmate Devon Peterkin had nine kills, nine digs, two blocks and two assists in the win.
Sophomore middle Nnenna Ibe added seven kills and hit .500 for the highly efficient Tigers, who posted a .280 hitting percentage for the match. That will improve their season percentage, which came into the match ranked 22nd in the NCAA, to .267.
Besides winning 12 straight matches, the Tigers have now won 22 consecutive sets, the most for a Princeton team this century. The 12-match win streak is the second-longest for Princeton this century, behind only a 20-match win streak by the Ivy League champion 2007 Tigers. Princeton has also won 15 straight Ivy League regular season matches, dating back to last season.
Princeton will now head on the road for its next four matches, beginning next Friday with a 7 pm at Dartmouth.
