Volleyball Heads North With Hopes Of Continuing Ivy Winning Ways
October 26, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Winners of 12 straight matches, including all eight in Ivy League play, the Princeton women's volleyball team will open a four-match road trip this weekend with hopes of maintaining control of the championship race. The task always becomes more difficult on the road, but that is the challenge for a Tiger squad playing its best volleyball in years.
Catch-22
Princeton enters the weekend having won 22 consecutive sets, the most for the program this century. During that stretch, Princeton has had more sets when it limited its opponents to under 20 points (16) than it has to at least 20 points (six).
Climbing Ivy
Princeton enters the weekend having won 15 straight Ivy League regular season matches, dating back to last season. The Tigers won their last seven in 2015 to clinch a share of the league title, though they lost an NCAA playoff match at Harvard. Princeton will return to Harvard this Saturday for a 5 pm showdown in Boston. If Princeton wins both matches this weekend, it would eliminate five teams from championship contention, including Harvard.
A Mattaliano Milestone
Cara Mattaliano, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, became the 13th player in program history to record 1,000 career kills last weekend. She enters this weekend with 1,003 kills, and she needs six to tie Kristi Hakman '92 for 12th on the list.
National Anthem
Princeton currently has the top RPI among any Ivy League team (82). The next closest Ivy League team in the RPI is Yale, which is ranked 124.
Fresh Faces
Princeton freshmen Jessie Harris, Maggie O'Connell and Devon Peterkin have all earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors this season; in fact, each of them has won the honor once in the last four weeks alone. Peterkin is a two-time honoree, including once after the Tigers' home sweep of Harvard and Dartmouth four weeks ago. Harris took Rookie of the Week honors after pacing the Tiger offense with 69 assists and five kills in road wins at Columbia and Cornell. O'Connell, who also won it after being named MVP of the Rutgers Tournament, won Rookie of the Week after a highly efficient performance in back-to-back win over Brown and Yale. She recorded at least 12 kills in both, she moved to second in the league in hitting percentage (.392), and she added four digs and four blocks during the weekend.
High Efficiency
Princeton leads the Ivy League and ranks 22nd in the NCAA with a .267 hitting percentage. Three Tigers (Maggie O'Connell, Brittany Ptak and Nnenna Ibe) rank 2-3-6 respectively in the league in individual hitting percentage.
