Princeton Opens Three-Match Homestand Friday, Looks To Continue Stellar Ivy Play
October 12, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
The reigning Ivy League champion Princeton women's volleyball team returns home Friday night to begin a crucial three-match homestand at Dillon Gym, where the Tigers will try to put some separation between themselves and the rest of the league.
How far we've come from this point last year, when it was separation that Princeton wanted to erase.
Princeton carries a nine-match win streak overall, and a 12-match regular season Ivy win streak, into Friday's 7 pm showdown against Brown. The Tigers have now won 15 of their last 16 Ivy League matches, a run that included a critical 3-2 road win at Brown last season that kept the Tigers afloat early in league play. They caught fire in the second half of the season, including home victories over both teams, to claim their 15th league title.
You can watch both matches this weekend, including Saturday's 5 pm showdown against Brown, on the Ivy League Digital Network.
Alone At The Top
Princeton enters the weekend in sole possession of first place in the Ivy League with a 5-0 record. Both Columbia and Yale have 4-1 marks, while every other team in the league has at least three losses. Of course, Princeton had three league losses at this exact moment last season, and it won 10 of its final 11 to share the Ivy title.
A Fine Nine
Dating back to a 3-2 win over the host Hoyas to conclude the Georgetown Classic, Princeton has won nine straight matches. That is the longest win streak for the program since the Ivy champion 2007 Tigers won 20 straight matches, including all 14 in Ivy play. Besides that streak, Princeton has only won more than nine straight matches once this century (2006, first 11 matches).
Senior Citizens
Princeton senior co-captains Cara Mattaliano and Brittany Ptak have both earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors since the Tigers began Ivy play three weeks ago. Ptak was brilliant in a 3-2 road win at Penn (21 kills, .625 hitting percentage), while Mattaliano had 14 kills, nine digs and hit .387 in a showdown of Ivy unbeatens last Friday, a 3-0 Tiger road win at Columbia.
Kills Countdown
Cara Mattaliano, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, needs 34 kills this weekend to become the 13th player in Princeton history to record more than 1,000 kills. One of those Tigers in the 1000-kill club is head coach Sabrina King, another former Ivy League Player of the Year who capped her career with 1,367 kills and three league titles.
Fresh Faces
Princeton freshmen Jessie Harris, Maggie O'Connell and Devon Peterkin have all earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors already this season. Peterkin is a two-time honoree, including once after the Tigers' home sweep of Harvard and Dartmouth two weeks ago. O'Connell won it after being named MVP of the Rutgers Tournament, while Harris is the reigning Rookie of the Week after pacing the Tiger offense with 69 assists and five kills in road wins at Columbia and Cornell.
High Efficiency
Princeton leads the Ivy League and ranks 25th in the NCAA with a .267 hitting percentage. Three Tigers (Brittany Ptak, Maggie O'Connell and Nnenna Ibe) rank 2-3-4 respectively in the league in individual hitting percentage.
