Upset of Nation's No. 4 Doubles Team Highlights Saturday in Michigan
October 15, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Senior Caroline Joyce and sophomore Nicole Kalhorn highlighted Saturday's play at Michigan's Wolverine Invitational with a 6-2 win over Michigan's Mira Ruder-Hook and Brienne Minor, the ITA's No. 4-ranked team in the nation.
"There was a lot of energy, so it was really, really cool," Kalhorn said. "We weren't really focused on what they were doing, but it was more about what CJ and I were doing and how we were handling ourselves."
Joyce and Kalhorn duo went 8-2 last year and are now 4-2 this year with Saturday's match as the first against an ITA-ranked pair.
"We've definitely figured out what patterns work for us," Joyce said. "Nicole is a great partner. She's great at net and she sets us up so well to win points, especially against these better teams."
The Princeton pair got out to a 3-0 lead in the single-set match before splitting the next four games and getting the final game to close out the win.
"You have to come out really warm and come out really strong and aggressive," Joyce said of playing a single-set match. "It also means you can't make a ton of errors at first because once you get behind, it's really hard to catch up. The beginning of the match is super, super important, because you can either get on top really quickly or you can get down really quickly and it's hard to recover."
Kalhorn was a two-time winner Saturday as she had Princeton's win in the singles portion of play, defeating Miami's Dominika Paterova 7-5, 6-1.
Sunday, the Tigers will wrap the event with singles against players from Washington and doubles against players from Miami (Fla.). Princeton's Saturday results are below.
