Princeton Baseball In The Pros: One Final Review Of The 2016 Season

PRINCETON, N.J. – With the Cleveland Indians sweeping the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship (ALCS), the Major League Baseball season featuring former Princeton Tigers have come to an end.
Danny Barnes was not part of the Blue Jay's ALCS roster, but was part of the team's American League Division Series roster for one game.
It was the second straight season that Princeton had a former player in the ALCS as Chris Young '02 helped the Kansas City Royals to the 2015 World Series title.
This year, six former Princeton players reached the big leagues in Barnes, Young, Matt Bowman (St. Louis Cardinals), David Hale '11 (Colorado Rockies), Ross Ohlendorf '05 (Cincinnati Reds), and Will Venable (Los Angeles Dodgers).
Let's take one final look back at the 2016 season.
Chris Young '02 – Kansas City Royals (MLB) – Young appeared in 34 games for the Royals, setting a career high with 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.

Ross Ohlendorf '05 – Cincinnati Reds (MLB) – Ohlendorf saw time in a career-best 64 games this season. He had the second best strikeout/nine innings ratio (9.3) and second lowest hits/nine innings rate (8.1) of his career.

Matt Bowman – St. Louis Cardinals (MLB) – As a Rule 5 selection for the Cardinals, Bowman was an outstanding middle reliever, going 2-5 with a 3.46 ERA in 59 games.

Danny Barnes – Toronto Blue Jays (MLB) – Barnes made his Major League debut for the Blue Jays on August 2nd vs. the Houston Astros, striking out two in an inning of work. In 41 outings in two levels of the minor league system, Barnes boasted a .73 ERA.

Mike Ford '14 – Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders (AAA) - Ford '14 made his Triple-A debut in the Triple-A National Championship game. The RailRiders won the contest, 3-1, over the El Paso Chihuahuas. The former Ivy League Player and Pitcher of the Year finished the 2016 campaign with a .289/.411/.479 slash line in 56 games. In 190 at-bats, Ford hit eight home runs, drove in 43 runs and scored 26 times.

Will Venable – Oklahoma City Dodgers (AAA) – The Dodgers fell to El Paso Chihuahuas, 3-1, in the best-of-five Pacific Coast League Championship Series. After only hitting .205 in 41 games for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, Venable hit 71 points higher in 46 contests for the Dodgers.

Jack Murphy – Oklahoma City Dodgers (AAA) – Murphy finished the 2016 season with a .250/.358/.327 slash line in 73 games for the Dodgers. His .358 on-base percentage is his highest rank since his rookie season in 2009.

Alec Keller '14 – Potomac Nationals (A+) – The Nationals fell in the Carolina League Division Series to the Lynchburg Hillcats in early September. Keller finished his season with 28 extra base hits, 14 steals and 63 RBI while hitting .285 and making the all-star team.
