Cornell Takes Down No. 13 Princeton, 3-2 in Double Overtime
October 29, 2016 | Field Hockey
ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell's Krysten Mayers's third goal of the contest in the second overtime gave the Big Red a 3-2 victory over the No. 13 Princeton Tigers at Dodson Field on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Big Red set the pace early as it recorded the first two shots of the contest, forcing freshman Grace Baylis to make stops. In the seventh minute, Mayers posted her eighth goal of the season to put the home team up early. She later added her second tally as she found some space in the circle and swiped one in the back of the cage at the 16:52 mark of the first half.
Â
As the clock moved near six minutes to go in the first half, sophomore Sophia Tornetta got the Tigers on the board.
Â
Princeton began to turn the tides over the final five minutes. After junior Ryan McCarthy's shot was knocked away, the Tigers snagged the equalizer a short time later. Senior Cat Caro dribbled along the goal line and whipped the ball across the cage for sophomore Jane Donio-Enscoe to slam home, tying the game at 2-all with 17 seconds left in the first stanza.
Â
Â
In the first overtime, each team had two penalty corners and two shots, but couldn't find the golden goal. In the second overtime session, Mayers completed her hat trick as she tipped the ball over Baylis on a shot attempt from Katy Weeks.
Â
This game was Princeton's first two-overtime game since back-to-back matchups during the 2014 season (Oct. 5-10). The Tigers fall to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the Ivy League while Cornell improves to 9-7 this season and 3-3 in conference. Princeton will finish the regular season at Bedford Field next Saturday vs. Penn (12 p.m.).

Five minutes into the second half, Caro looked to put the Tigers in front, but Cornell's Maddie Henry made one of her six saves. Following a yellow card for sophomore Elise Wong, the Big Red sent two shots towards on goal, but one was blocked and the other was off the mark. The Tigers were awarded a corner in the 54th minute, but Henry stopped an attempt by senior Hailey Reeves. Another Princeton corner saw two shots on goal, but Henry denied both.Donio-Enscoe ties it up right before the half! Teams squared at 2-all at the intermission. pic.twitter.com/UaS1umnx4W
