The No. 18 Princeton Tigers wrap up the 2016 regular season as they host the Penn. Quakers at Bedford Field on Saturday (12 p.m.). Before the game, the team will honor its three seniors, Cat Caro, Ellen Dobrijevic and Hailey Reeves for their contributions to the team over the past four years. The Class of 2016 has won 42 games, posting an .888 winning percentage in the Ivy League and won three NCAA Tournament games.
What's Going On?
- The Tigers are 9-7 in 2016 and 4-2 in the Ivy League. Princeton was defeated by Cornell last weekend, 3-2, in double overtime. The Big Red's Krysten Mayers' scored three times in the victory.Â
- Princeton found itself trailing 2-0 in the first half, but rallied with tallies from sophomores Sophia Tornetta and Jane Donio-Enscoe.Â
- The game was the Tigers' first double overtime contest since back-to-back matchups during the 2014 season (Oct. 5-10).
- With the loss, Harvard clinched the outright Ivy League title.
- Caro has a career-high 14 goals and 31 points to lead the Tigers. After scoring 12 goals in her first two seasons combined, junior Ryan McCarthy has 11 tallies and a career-best 26 points in 2016. Tornetta is averaging over two points per game with 19 in nine contests. Freshman Carlotta von Gierke boasts a team-high seven assists.
- Princeton has two wins over top-20 teams this season, defeating then No. 12 Albany (Sept. 9) and then No. 10 Delaware (Sept. 11).
- The Tigers are No. 15 in the NCAA's RPI rankings.
- Caro is tied for second in the Ivy League in goals and is third in points. She is ranked inside the top 20 nationally in goals per game (0.93) and points per game (2.13).
- McCarthy is fifth in the conference in goals while von Gierke is tied for second in assists.
- Carla Tagliente, formerly of UMass, was named head coach on June 29th.
- During her time at UMass, Tagliente averaged nearly 13 wins a year and guided the team to three Atlantic-10 titles. She was named A-10 Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
- Kristen Holmes-Winn stepped down as Princeton field hockey coach on June 20th to become the Vice President of Performance Science and Optimization for a company called "WHOOP."Â
- During her tenure, Holmes-Winn led Princeton to the 2012 National Championship, 12 Ivy League titles, 11 NCAA tournaments and a 164-80 overall (.672) and 86-5 Ivy (.940) record. In postseason play, the Tigers reached the NCAA quarterfinals seven times (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015).
- Caro, Tornetta and freshman Maddie Bacskai were on the United States U-21 women's national field hockey team that scored a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Tournament on Apr. 9.
- The trio, most recently, was selected to U-21 national team's roster for the Women's Hockey Junior World Cup this November.
- Katie Reinprecht '13, Julia Reinprecht '14 and Kathleen Sharkey '13 were named to the United States field hockey team that placed fifth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since 1996.
- The Tigers lead the all-time series, 26-15-3.
- Princeton was won 21 of the last 22 meetings vs. Penn, including a current streak of 11-in-a-row.
- Princeton has taken down Penn five straight times at home. The Quakers' last win vs. the Tigers was in Princeton during the 2004 campaign.
- The Quakers' last winning streak vs. Princeton was a five-game stretch from 1989-93.
- McCarthy netted the game winner just 2:35 into the first overtime to give 18th-ranked Princeton a 2-1 victory over Penn on the final day of the 2015 regular season.
- Entering the game having already assured itself at least a share of the conference title, Princeton claimed the Ivy crown outright, and with it the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
- Princeton finished with an 8-7 shot advantage with a 7-5 edge in penalty corners.
- The Quakers are 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the Ivy League.
- Penn has defeated all of its' Philadelphia rivals, Temple, Villanova, Drexel and St. Joseph's.
- The Ivy League foe has taken on three ranked teams, falling to No. 1 North Carolina, 6-2 (Sept. 4), No. 1 Syracuse, 4-1 (Sept. 25) and No. 8 Delaware, 3-2 (Oct. 16).
- Junior Alex Hoover leads the Quakers with 15 goals and 37 points. She was selected as the NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week yesterday.
- Elise Tilton was picked for the 2016 Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior Game roster earlier this week.
