No. 11 Princeton Picks Up Two NWPC Wins; Sits Atop Conference Standings

NEW ROCHELLE/BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The No. 11 Princeton Tigers earned two Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) victories, defeating the Iona Gaels, 10-4, and No. 18 St. Francis-Brooklyn Terriers, 10-8, today.

Freshman Sean Duncan scored four times to pace the offense for Princeton. Senior Jovan Jeremic and sophomore Matt Payne also added two tallies each. Junior Vojislav Mitrovic recorded 17 saves in the win.
The Tigers used a five-goal spurt in the third quarter to pull away and take down Iona. A 3-2 advantage at halftime turned into an 8-2 lead after the Tigers pitched a shutout. Iona secured the first two tallies of the fourth frame to cut its deficit to four, but Princeton put the clamps down and ended with the final two goals in the victory.

Payne led the team with six points (two goals, four assists) while three other Tigers posted multi-goal outings. Duncan drew seven ejections while Mitrovic made 15 saves in Princeton's victory.
The contest was a fantastic conference battle that featured seven ties and did not have a team lead by more than a goal until the 3:21 mark of the fourth quarter. Tied at 7-all, heading into the fourth stanza, sophomore Ryan Wilson registered back-to-back goals to put the Tigers in front, 9-7. Colina snagged another insurance tally to put Princeton ahead by three and clinch the victory.
With its two wins this weekend, the Tigers improve to 15-7 overall and 6-1 in the NWPC. Head coach Luis Nicolao's squad sits atop the conference standings ahead of No. 13 Harvard (5-2), No. 10 Brown (4-2), St. Francis-Brooklyn (3-3), Iona (1-5) and MIT (0-6).
Princeton will wrap up the regular season next weekend on the road as it takes on MIT (10:30 a.m.) and Harvard (8 p.m.) on Saturday and Brown on Sunday (2:30 p.m.)
