PRINCETON, N.J. (11/10/16) - This weekend marks the first games of the 2016-17 season at historic Hobey Baker Rink, as the Princeton men's hockey team begins Ivy League play hosting Harvard on Friday night and Dartmouth on Saturday night.
EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton jumped right into the season against three squads who had six games edge due to an earlier start. The Tigers fell to Michigan State 6-2, dropped a 4-0 game to St. Lawrence - a team receiving votes in the national poll, and then lost 4-2 to Clarkson. A trio of sophomores led the Tigers in scoring. Alex Riche scored twice against the Spartans and then added an assist last weekend. Ryan Kuffner has one goal and two assists, while Max Veronneau has a team-best three assists. Senior Ryan Siiro and defenders Josh Teves and Derek Topatigh have one point apiece. Senior netminder Colton Phinney has an .865 save percentage and a 4.04 goals against average with 77 saves on 89 shots. Princeton's penalty kill ranks fourth in the nation at 92.3 percent (12 of 13), while the power play is 1 for 19.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard is ranked No. 10 in the USCHO poll with a 3-0-1 overall record. It has the top scoring offense in the nation, averaging 4.50 goals per game and has held teams to just 1.50 gpg. Additionally the team has the best power-play in the country converting six of 18. The penalty kill is 16 for 20. Harvard opened with a pair of wins over second-year program Arizona State, tied Colgate and beat Cornell by one goal. Sophomore Ryan Donato (BOS), senior Luke Esposito and senior Tyler Moy (NSH) all sit atop the scoring column with six points apiece. Sophomore Lewis Zerter-Gossage, Sean Malone (BUF) and Adam Fox (CGY) follow with five points each. Junior Merrick Madsen (PHI) has been the lone goaltender for the Crimson. He owns a 1.47 GAA and a .931 save percentage, with 81 saves on 87 shots.
THE PRINCETON/HARVARD SERIES
Harvard holds the leads in the series with Princeton since the teams first met in March 1902. The Crimson are 154-57-11 in the series and have won the last six meetings. Princeton's last win in the series was in 2012-13 when the Tigers swept Harvard that season.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth is 2-0-1 on the season while playing all three games at home. The team topped Michigan 3-2 in the season opener before a 1-1 draw with Cornell and a 2-0 shutout over Colgate last weekend. With an unbeaten record, the squad is receiving votes in the latest USCHO poll. Dartmouth is averaging 2.00 goals per game and allowing one fewer. The power play has struggled, going 0 for 19, while the penalty kill is solid at 85.7 percent (12 of 14). It's been a balanced scoring effort for the Big Green with nine players have a point or more. Junior Carl Hesler has three points on two assists and one goal, while senior Troy Crema has scored twice. Freshman Cam Strong and junior Corey Kalk each have two points on a goal and an assist. Junior Devin Buffalo is the only netminder Dartmouth has utilized. He has a 0.97 GAA and a .957 save percentage, allowing just three goals on 69 shots.
THE PRINCETON/DARTMOUTH SERIES
Dartmouth owns a 102-86-15 edge in the all-time series and have won the last seven games. Last year at Hobey Baker Rink, the Big Green narrowly defeated the Tigers 3-2 and then took a 2-0 game in Hanover in January.
