Germain & Robinson Score as Princeton Falls to Harvard in Home Opener
November 12, 2016 | Men's Ice Hockey
Freshman Jeremy Germain and junior Eric Robinson scored their first goals of the season for Princeton in a span of 3:42 in the second period but a three-goal third period gave No. 10 Harvard a lift in the 5-2 decision.
Â
The Tigers were outshooting Harvard 25-21 after two periods as the teams entered the final period tied at 2-2.
"We're close, that's why it's so frustrating," head coach Ron Fogarty said. "Last year it was more hoping, hoping they'd get it. I think we now we're carrying the play, coming out of the zone with possession and entering with attack waves and sustainability in the offensive zone so it's more that you know from experience that what you are doing can yield wins. From a player's psyche though you want to get that win so you have that tangible result.
Ryan Donato notched his fourth of the season as he got a Lewis Zerter-Gossage rebound in the right corner from Alexander Kerfoot and skated across the paint for the 1-0 score at 11:58 of the first period.
Â
Sophomore Ryan Teves took the initial shot that would lead to Germain's goal at 1:56 of the second. It was blocked by a Crimson defender and fought for and won by David Hallisey. Hallisey slotted the puck for Germain and he one-timed it past Merrick Madsen. Germain had a hand in the second goal just a couple shifts later when he won a draw clean back to Robinson at the point and he rifled the puck over the glove.
Â
Tyler Moy evened the game at 2-2 at 17:39 when he shot over the right shoulder of Colton Phinney after a turnover in the neutral zone. Sean Malone intercepted a pass and pushed it back into the zone for Devin Tringale who saw Moy along the left wall.
Â
Trinagle was credited with the game winner at 3:36 of the third when he grabbed a loose puck and on an odd-man rush snuck the puck between the right post and Phinney.
Â
The Tigers were crafty up front to protect a quick transition shot as a defender sacrificed his body on the left side, forcing the Crimson to go around the back of the cage. A poke check by Germain forced Harvard back outside but Viktor Dombrovskiy was able to sneak it through traffic from the top of the point for the two-goal cushion at 15:11.
Â
Zerter-Gossage iced the game with an empty-net goal with 50 seconds remaining.
"We had a good first two periods and then in the third we got a little sloppy, but they're a really good team and we had two good periods so that is something to build off of," Phinney said. He shouldered much responsibility adding "we've been scoring enough goals so I think a lot of it falls on me and I just need to be better, so I will get better as the season goes on."
Phinney made 28 saves for the Tigers, while Madsen stopped 27 for the Crimson.
Â
Princeton (0-4, 0-3 ECAC) was 0 for 3 on the power play while Harvard (4-0-1, 2-0-1 ECAC) was 0 for 2.
