Robinson Scores Twice as Princeton Ties Dartmouth
November 12, 2016 | Men's Ice Hockey
Junior Eric Robinson scored both Princeton goals as the men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 draw with Dartmouth this evening at Hobey Baker Rink.
Dartmouth's Cam Strong clipped the puck off a Princeton players stick at the top of the blue line and had a breakaway opportunity late in the third. Strong beat netminder Colton Phinney on the one-on-one, but Phinney would finish out the period with 12 total saves and a season-high 33 total.
After a pair of penalties, one for each squad, five minutes into the second period, the Big Green's Josh Hartley was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for contact to the head. He knocked sophomore Ryan Kuffner in front of the penalty boxes as he was trying to get into the zone. It took the Tigers just 18 seconds to score the 4x3 goal as Robinson got help from freshman Derek Topatigh and sophomore Alex Riche as they cycled the puck around the zone.
John Ernsting put the Big Green back on top at the close of the second period as he redirected a Connor Yau shot from the top of the left circle after Grant Opperman grabbed the puck in the corner.
A drive by Joe Grabowski at the right point set up the next goal, as the puck got stuck in traffic. David Hallisey tried to backhand it in from knees, but it was squeezed out to Jeremy Germain behind the extended red and he push it forward to the blade of Robinson on the doorstep.
Robinson finished the weekend with three goals. "The message stays the same, but to come out with a point here is pretty big," Robinson said. "Being able to look back on Monday on the weekend and take the positives away from it and keep building on those positives is huge for our team." Robinson credited the team's 4x3 drills at practices for the first goal and his linemates relentlessness on the second.
The Tigers were able to fight off a penalty with 3:14 remaining and continue to hold Dartmouth without a power-play goal this season and force overtime.
Germain had the Tigers best chance to win the game in overtime as Robinson delivered a cross-ice pass to the backdoor but he couldn't get it in time. With 39 seconds to play Princeton had a power-play opportunity as Ernsting received two for tripping but time ran out on the Tigers.
Devin Buffalo stopped 22 shots for Dartmouth as the Big Green outshot Princeton 35-24.
Princeton hits the road for the next four games. The squad will travel to Central New York next weekend to face Colgate and Cornell.
