A Review Of Princeton's 2016-17 Opening Weekend

PRINCETON, N.J. – Head coach Courtney Banghart's squad dropped the first two games of the 2016-17 season with a 70-62 decision to Rider (Nov. 11) and 56-45 loss to George Washington (Nov. 13).

Let's take a look back at the five things to watch for the Rider/GW weekend.

1.    Honoring the Past - Prior to the game before Rider, Princeton unveiled the 2016 NCAA Tournament banner. Four members of the Class of 2016, Amanda Berntsen, Michelle Miller, Alex Wheatley and Taylor Williams returned for the ceremony. The Class of 2016 helped the Tigers to a 97-23 overall record in their four seasons including a 50-6 mark in Ivy League play. They also helped the program win its first-ever NCAA and WNIT tournament games. The group swept 20 of their 23 Ivy League weekends and helped Princeton to two national rankings: No. 24 in 2012 and No. 13 in 2014-15, the highest ever in Ivy women's basketball history.

2.    A New Offense – Despite losing five of its top six scorers, the Tigers got offense from new faces including freshman Bella Alarie, who averaged 16.0 points per game over the weekend. On Friday vs. Rider, Alarie sank 9-of-18 (50.0 percent) to finish with 24 points. Junior Tia Weledji set a new career high with 12 points vs. Rider while sophomore Jordan Muhammad's four three-pointers gave her a personal best (12 points) vs. George Washington on Sunday.
3.    Defense, Defense, Defense – Rider had four players finish in double figures highlighted by Stella Johnson's 20 points on 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from the floor. As a team, Rider shot 44.6 percent (29-of-65), an improvement from the year prior where Princeton held Rider to 20-of-58 (34.5 percent) in a 78-59 victory.
4.    Right Out Of The Gate – Princeton held Caira Washington, an A-10 Preseason All-Conference first team selection, to six points and four rebounds on Sunday. Preseason third team pick Hannah Schiable went just 3-of-10 (30 percent) from the field.
5.     Cleaning Up The Glass – The Tigers held their own against George Washington, who finished third in all of Division I in rebounding margin (+14.2) in 2015-16, getting outrebounded 40-38. Junior Leslie Robinson snagged a career-high eight rebounds while three other Tigers grabbed at least four boards in the loss.

Princeton welcomes the Dayton Flyers to Jadwin Gymnasium on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. and is available on the Ivy League Digital Network.
