Duncan Picked As NWPC Rookie Of The Year; Five Named All-Conference
November 18, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 12 Princeton Tigers finished as the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Tournament despite a season littered with injuries. Even with the hurdles that faced the team, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announced five Tigers on the NWPC All-Conference teams.
Freshman Sean Duncan was selected as the NWPC Rookie of the Year. He is the third person in program history to receive the honor, the last being Drew Hoffenberg in 2011. The freshman scored 45 goals and drew a team-high 53 ejections.
With one of the top individual seasons in men's water polo history, sophomore Matt Payne was named to the first-team all-conference. He leads the team with 57 tallies while his 52 assists are five shy of matching the program record. Payne has scored in every game he's played and has 20 multi-goal outings.
Princeton had four members selected to the second team all-conference in juniors Vojislav Mitrovic, Jordan Colina, sophomore Ryan Wilson and Duncan. Mitrovic went 11-8 in goal with a .616 save percentage. He has stopped at least 10 shots or more in 16 of his 19 starts including tying the single-game mark of 20 saves vs. St. Francis-Brooklyn on Sept. 20. For the third straight season, Colina has registered 50+ goals along with grabbing 55 steals. Colina is one of just 10 Princeton players ever to score at least 150 goals in his career. Wilson had a stellar all-around campaign, posting 32 goals, 39 assists, 32 steals and 25 drawn ejections. Wilson and Payne were the only two players on the team to secure at least 20 or more goals, assists, steals and drawn ejections.
Princeton is seeking its second straight NCAA Tournament appearances as it hosts the NWPC Tournament at DeNunzio Pool (Nov. 18-20). The Tigers will be the No. 2 seed due to Brown winning the tiebreaker because of a bigger goal difference over the No. 3 seed Harvard. Harvard will take on the No. 6 seed MIT while St. Francis-Brooklyn and Iona will take part in the No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchup. Princeton will play the winner of Harvard, MIT on Nov. 19 at 3:30 p.m.
