After a long plane ride down to the nearly the end of the world, filled with jaw dropping views of everything from the Alps to the Sahara Desert, we had finally arrived in Cape Town. Before we left the Netherlands, Jeremey had told us that our time here would be one of the most jam packed of our lives, but I don't think any of us were ready for what South Africa had in store for us on day one.
After having a rejuvenating sleep, eating a huge breakfast, and posting a snapstory of the beachfront view from our hotel, we were ready to tackle one of the most vibrant cities I have yet to experience. First, we hopped on the bus and climbed the winding roads up to Table Mountain, the 7th Natural Wonder of the World. As soon as we got to the top, via twisting cable cars with unbelievable views of the city below, we could all see why the mountain had been deemed so wonderful. The mixture of views of the city below, the mountains beside, and the ocean beyond juxtaposed to present a breathtaking experience none of us will soon forget.
          Â
As we got on the bus to our next generation, we wondered aloud how anything could top such a fantastic start to the day, but once we arrived at our next destination we quickly found something that would. What we saw at the Baphumelele Children's Home in the Khayelitsha Township was one of the most truly inspiring things I had ever seen. It is an organization that does so many absolutely incredible things for the children of the township, many of them orphans or whose parents are too poor to feed them or school them, with a jarring lack of resources. I know we were all captivated by the good hearts, kind souls, and bright minds of figures like Mama Rosie and others, whose ingenuity and strength in the face of adversity have allowed the home to do amazing things in the lives of those it touches.
          Â
Finally, hearts filled from our most recent experience, we traveled through the expansive city down to the sea where we were to take surf lessons. After wiggling into our wet suits and receiving instruction on how to stand on the board, how to fall off the board, and how to avoid sharks and jellyfish we were ready to head out into the water. With plenty of help from our instructors and after countless of wipeouts, most of us were able to catch at least a few waves and ride them to shore. We all left the water cold, tired, and happy. Our first day in Africa was an unforgettable, awe-inspiring experience that left us incredibly excited for what the rest of the trip has in store for us!
