Ivy Champ Princeton Football Leads League With 18 All-Ivy Nods; Surace Named Unanimous Coach of the Year
November 22, 2016 | Football
The 2016 Ivy League champion Princeton Tigers, led by unanimous Head Coach of the Year Bob Surace, earned a league-best 18 All-Ivy League honorees Tuesday, it was announced by the Ivy League Office.
Six players — Luke Catarius, James Gales, Kurt Holuba, John Lovett, Mitchell Sweigart, and Dorian Williams — were named to the All-Ivy First Team, while six others — Scott Carpenter, Rohan Hylton, Chad Kanoff, Erik Ramirez, Joe Rhattigan, and Henry Schlossberg — were named to the Second Team. Isaiah Barnes, Jesper Horsted, Birk Olson, Trevor Osborne, Reily Radosevich, and Tyler Roth each earned Honorable Mention.
Surace, who has been a finalist for the FCS Head Coach of the Year three times in the last five seasons, was the unanimous selection for the Head Coach of the Year. He took a team picked to finish fifth in the preseason media poll to its second Ivy title in the last four years. In doing so, Princeton led the Ivy League in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense, total defense, rushing offense, and rushing defense.
The finalists for the Bushnell Cup, which honors both the Ivy League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, will be announced next week. Dartmouth wide receiver Hunter Hagdorn was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
FIRST-TEAM HONOREES
Two members of the Princeton offense were named to the first team, including record-setting quarterback John Lovett, who led the FCS with 20 rushing touchdowns this season. He also threw 10 touchdowns and caught one, meaning he accounted for 31 touchdowns this season. Five other Ivy League teams scored 30 touchdowns or fewer.
One of the men who paved his way to the end zone made his debut on the All-Ivy first team. Sweigart played left tackle and started all 10 games for Princeton, which led the Ivy League with more than 183 rushing yards per game. He showed his dedication to the team during the overtime game vs. Harvard, when he played every snap on offense after three teammates were lost to injury.
Catarius led Princeton and ranked ninth in the Ivy League with 76 tackles this season. He had at least seven tackles in five of the Tigers' last six games, and he helped drive a defense that ranked fifth nationally in run defense (80.1 yards per game).
Gales is the only member of the six first-team honorees who hadn't started a single game of his career before this season. He made the most of his senior year, recording interceptions in three straight games, including a key one in the red zone during a shutout of Penn, and he added 35 tackles on the season.
Another key member of that run defense was Holuba, who started on the defensive line and led the Ivy League with 7.0 sacks in conference play. Holuba, the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after a three-sack performance against Harvard, recorded at least a half sack in five of the last six games, and he recorded 34 tackles on the defensive line.
Williams, the four-year starter and tri-captain, earned his first spot on the first team after earning second-team honors last season. He ranked third on the team with 55 tackles, and he added two interceptions, two breakups and a forced fumble on one of the most explosive sacks of the Ivy season during the win over Yale.
SECOND-TEAM HONOREES
Carpenter was named to his third All-Ivy League team after catching 14 passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns, including the final score of the title-clinching win over Harvard. He continued to provide the type of support on the offensive line that he has over his last three seasons as a starter.
Hylton ranked second on the team with 70 tackles one year after missing the final five games of the 2015 season with an injury. He added seven tackles for loss and two interceptions — including one in the end zone against Dartmouth — for the league's top-ranked defense.
Kanoff, a tri-captain, made his debut on the All-Ivy team after moving to fifth on the all-time Princeton passing list with 4,036 yards. He completed over 69% of his passes in four of the six Ivy League wins, and he was named the GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week after going 21 for 25 for 230 yards and three touchdowns in the Ivy-opening win over Columbia.
Ramirez was in his first year as a starting guard, and he started all 10 games for the Ivy League champion. In conference play, Princeton ranked at the top of the league in both first downs and third-down conversions, and it averaged 36.0 points per game in Ivy play.
Rhattigan, the third tri-captain for Princeton's 11th Ivy championship team, rushed for 503 yards and five touchdowns during his senior season, despite dealing with injuries that hampered his final month. He rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown in the win over Penn, and added a three-touchdown effort in the season opener against Lafayette.
Schlossberg returned to the All-Ivy League team after leading all Princeton defensive linemen with 41 tackles. He had eight tackles for loss, second-most on the team, and had an eight-tackle performance in the win over Penn.
HONORABLE MENTION
Barnes and Horsted ranked 1-2 for Princeton in receptions. Barnes led the team with 36 catches for 563 yards, including his memorable 95-yard touchdown catch against Cornell, while Horsted added 30 catches for 413 yards, including a key touchdown over Dartmouth that opened a two-score lead in the second half.
Olson had 19 tackles, including 5.5 for loss, as a run-stopping outside linebacker/edge lineman. Osborne averaged 21.8 yards per kick return this season, while Radosevich played in all 10 games on the offensive line and won the team's Top Offensive Freshman honor. Roth made the All-Ivy team for the third time in his career after averaging a personal-best 40.3 yards per punt.
