From Outdoors To The World's Most Famous Arena, Tigers Focus On Sunday's Grapple At The Garden
November 25, 2016 | Wrestling
If you think the Princeton wrestling team would suffer a letdown following the second-most attended dual match in NCAA history, you didn't look at the upcoming venue.
You don't let down at the World's Most Famous Arena.
Madison Square Garden will serve as host for the 2016 Grapple at the Garden, which takes place Sunday, Nov. 27. Princeton will compete twice, starting with a 10:30 am showdown against Maryland. The Tigers will take on Buffalo at 12:30 during the second shift of matches.
Princeton, which opened its season in impressive fashion at the Southeast Open, enters the Grapple with an 0-1 record following the historic "Battle at the Birthplace" against Rutgers. Despite splitting the 10 matches, the 13th-ranked Scarlet Knights fought off the upset attempt with bonus points and ultimately scored a 19-16 win.
The highlight match, however, went to the Tigers. Freshman Matt Kolodzik scored a takedown with less than 10 seconds remaining to pull out a 4-3 victory over All-American Anthony Ashnault to remain undefeated at 141. The win catipulted Kolodzik up the national rankings; he comes into the weekend ranked fourth by InterMat. That matches the ranking by returning All-American Brett Harner, who won his match at 197.
Maryland comes into the Grapple with an 0-2 record, with close losses to both Lock Haven and Virginia, while Buffalo almost pulled off the biggest upset of the early season. The Bulls raced out to a 9-0 lead over No. 7 Cornell, but the Big Red battled back for an 18-15 win.
Princeton is 4-2 all-time in the Grapple at the Garden. Last season, the Tigers defeated Hofstra 33-9, but fell to nationally ranked Nebraska 21-12.
