Roberts Wins Consolation Title to Close Fall as Tigers Wrap Events in Florida, Georgia
November 06, 2016 | Men's Tennis
The fall season came to a close Sunday for the Princeton men's tennis team with Davey Roberts winning the consolation title at the Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Sarasota, Fla., and Princeton taking both of its doubles matches and three of five in singles at Georgia's Bulldog Scramble.
The Tigers will resume Jan. 29 with a scrimmage against Penn in Jadwin Gym before a trip to Michigan and Indiana the first weekend of February.
Roberts beat North Florida's Sahil Deshmukh 6-4, 6-4 to win the consolation title in Florida, winning four straight matches, including three in straight sets, after dropping his main-draw first-round match. Payton Holden and Kial Kaiser were winners in both singles and doubles in Georgia.
"Overall, it was a solid fall break trip for us with some good success against quality competition," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "At the Georgia event, Alex (Day) really played at a consistent level all weekend, which is great to see. I also felt we did some good things in doubles with some various combinations. At the Florida event, Davey obviously played very well to go 4-1 and win the back draw. He faced an experienced and strong opponent from USF in the first round. After a close loss there, he grinded through the remaining matches to cap off a good week. We'll now turn our attention to the non-competitive part of our season for the next two months as we prepare for the spring dual-match season. It's always a good opportunity to continue working hard in the weight room while getting a chance at more individualized work on-court. We can also use the time to heal some injures and hopefully be at full strength when we open at Michigan Feb. 2."
Princeton's results from Sunday are below, and a completed draw from the Florida event is here.
