Women's Squash Coach Gail Ramsay Wraps Up Successful Fall Trip To Greece
November 07, 2016 | Women's Squash
For more on the Princeton women's squash team's fall international trip to Greece, check out Blog #1, Blog #2, Blog #3, and Blog #4.
We just arrived back to Princeton after an amazing adventure in Greece. Overall we had a fabulous squash and travel experience. The team bonding was special which is always an important angle of all our international tours. I enjoyed getting to know the freshmen, Madison Soukup and Morgan Steelman. It is one of our smaller classes but they are two impressive players and people. I look forward to a fun and successful four years with them.
Our sophomores Izzy Hirshberg, Sam Chai, Camille Price and Kate Feeley also found ways to contribute some very positive energy and direction to the tour. They worked well together as a class and were so excited to be a part of the experience, their efforts were awesome.
The junior class stepped up their game on and off the court. It was great to see Lindsey Scott play some great squash on the last day. Kira Keating and Natalie Tung also got some very good squash in after some tough challenges with injuries this fall. It was wonderful to see them playing so well. Olivia Fiechter has been out with an injury but was able to continue her rehab and even ramp it up a bit. We hope to see here on court playing some great squash soon.
I have to mention the seniors and their consistent great leadership, dedication, hard work and loyalty to the team and me. They did an outstanding job of unifying the team, keeping them in line and making them all feel included and connected. It was a tremendous effort by the Class of 2016 which consists of Ashley Richards, Gabriella Garr and our captains Maria Elena Ubina and Alex Toth. Thanks for all your help!
The final day of activities was Saturday. We played our second match at the Vari Club starting at 11:00 am, and lasting until about 3:00. The matches were competitive and the Tigers managed to win a majority of them. I felt the match play was an overall success and a great experience for the women. Squash is a small sport in Greece but I can see the players who are coaching and competing love the game. I think the economic situation has slowed the growth of the game but I am hopeful things will improve for the Greek people and more and more juniors and adults will come to the game.
Our last outing in Greece was very specia, asl it was with the squash players we played against on Saturday. We all meet out at a Greek Tavern and had a lovely meal and were able to get to know the our new squash friends and enjoy one last Greek meal (the food was wonderful). We talked, eat a lot and listened to some beautiful Greek music. A perfect end to a incredible trip!
The team and Tyler and I would like to thank some key people who helped make this tour a success. Thank you to Jeremy from ZagSports.com for putting it together. Thanks to Stelios Ziogas (our tour guide) who show us around Athens and Mykonos for most of our stay and Gregory who took good care of us our last couple days! I would like to send a special thanks to Karen Malec our administrator who helpful keep us on track and on time. Thanks to Kathy Rohrer our Faculty-Fellow and who has now been on three tours with us. She helped in many ways but mostly we all just love having her travel with us. I can not forget to thank Tyler Osborne, the best assistant coach a head coach can ask for. Tyler did most if not all of the travel details that Princeton requires, and he really did a tremendous job. He also made traveling a more relaxing adventure with his calm and mellow demeanor — nothing is a problem.
I would also like to thank of course Princeton for supporting athletics in such a big way. And a big thank you to the Princeton Athletic Department and Mollie Marcoux, the Ford Family Director of Athletics, for the support in our foreign tour. The department plays a major role and there are many to thank; to name just a few individuals who touched this project, let's start with Allison Rich (Senior Associate Director of Athletics/SWA), Chris Brock (Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Finance), Ryan Yurko (Associate Director of Athletics/Finance) and Jon Kurian (Assistant Director of Athletics/Business Operations), each of whom had big roles in the organization. I would also like to send a special thanks to Craig Sachson (Assistant Director of Athletics, Communications) who posted our blog and manages our GoPrincetonTigers.com squash page. The one group that I did not mention yet is the most important player in many ways that makes this a team effort and that is our amazing, thoughtful and generous Friends of Princeton Squash Group. This group is made up of people who have supported the program over the years, our parents friends and families and of course our amazing alumni. Without the continuing and generous financial support of our Friends Group we could not even think about doing this tour. Thank you all so much for keeping Princeton Squash able to offer this opportunity to it's athletes.
