Five Items From Princeton's Last Road Trip Of 2016
December 28, 2016 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers finish 2016 on the road as they take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Thursday (7 p.m.) and the Lipscomb Bisons on Saturday (1 p.m.).
Â
Freshman Sensation – Bella Alarie was honored as the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week and the conference's Rookie of the Week for her performance vs. Wagner last Wednesday. It's the second time that the freshman has been named Co-Player of the Week and fourth time she picked up Rookie of the Week accolades. She is believed to be the first-ever freshman in Ivy history to be named Player of the Week twice and the second rookie.
Â
Alarie just missed a double-double with 20 points and nine boards in the Tigers' win over Wagner. The freshman was 9-of-12 from the floor (75 percent), her best shooting performance of the season. She also dished out four assists, swatted three shots and had a steal.
Â
Feeling Charitable? - Georgia Tech ranks 21st nationally in free throw attempts (262), however is only shooting 59.9 percent, which is 330th out of 344 Division-I teams. The Yellow Jackets have also committed the seventh most personal fouls in the country (22.2). In five road contests, Princeton has been called for 20.6 fouls per game while its opponents have taken more than 19 free throws per meeting. In a close matchup, the team that gets to the free-throw line more frequently could find itself with the victory.
Â
Defense, Defense, Defense – For the third time in the last four games, Princeton will face a team ranked among the NCAA's best in opponent's field goal percentage defense as Georgia Tech places 16th (33.8 percent). In the month of December, the Yellow Jackets have gone 4-2 and have held four opponents under 20 made baskets. Princeton is 0-2 against teams ranked in the nation's top-20 in field goal percentage defense.
Â
From Downtown! – Lipscomb takes over 20 three-pointers per game which is 35th in Division-I. Alex Banks leads the Bisons in three-point field goal percentage (.368) while Meredith Lovelady has the team-high in long distance baskets (27) and attempts (83). Lovelady's 83 shots from beyond the arc are 58th in the country. Despite the Bisons; long-range game, they are only shooting 28.8 percent from that distance.
Â
Offensive Fireworks – The Bisons are allowing 76.6 points per game, the 10th worst in the NCAA. Lipscomb have given up 80 points or more three times including a 100-point performance by Belmont on Nov. 29. The Tigers broke three school records in their 107-44 victory over Wagner last week. Princeton broke the program record for points in a game, points in a quarter (34) and points in a half (60). Head coach Courtney Banghart's squad was the 27th team this season to score over 100 points at the Division-I level.
