Third-Ranked Women's Squash Moves To 9-2 With Home Sweep Of Cornell
February 13, 2016 | Women's Squash
While the final score was a sweep, there was plenty of drama on the Jadwin Squash Courts, especially at the No. 2 position. Senior Rachel Leizman, who posted a critical victory during her freshman journey to an Ivy League title, outlasted Rachel Scherman in a 3-2 thriller.
Leizman actually trailed 2-1 in the match and was pushed deep in the fourth, but she held out for a 12-10 win, and then took the fifth 11-7.
Junior Alexandra Toth was also pushed to five games, but she also finished her victory with an 11-7 win over Emma Uible.
Both Leizman and Tara Harrington (3-0 at No. 7) earned wins in their final home Ivy League matches, and both will try to cap their Ivy careers with wins Sunday afternoon at Columbia.
THOUGHTS FROM THE TIGERS
Samantha Chai
Our team played really well today to secure a 9-0 win even without Maria Elena. Cornell has a strong top half of their ladder, but Rachel and Toth played particularly well in their fifth games to outlast their opponents. Despite how late our match was, our team agreed in the locker room that we wanted to keep a high energy level. I think our result showed this.
Alex Toth
My shots were not going where I wanted them to, but I kept fighting to the end and pulled out a win.
Libbie Maine
The team played great today. We had to deal with being flexible and playing up from our normal spots but the women rose to the occasion! Two more big matches left in our regular season, but it definitely helps to be facing our opponents with good wins behind us.
Head Coach Gail Ramsay
Overall the team played well tonight against Cornell. Alex Toth has been struggling through an ankle injury and I thought tonight was a little breakthrough for her, she started to play a little more aggressively and with a little more confidence, it was good to see her pull out the tough five game match. Rachel also had a very good win over the number two playe.r I had to sit out Maria Elena with an injury. Rachel had a tough five-game match; she was down 2-1 and was struggling a bit with her consistency, especially on a number of unforced errors on her attacking game. I was excited to see her pull it together tactically in the last two games, she started to make better decisions and executed more consistently.
