PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton women's water polo team wrapped up play at the Princeton Invitational with a 15-8 victory over the Iona Gaels on Sunday afternoon at the DeNunzio Pool. The team improved to 4-0 on the young season.
Sophomore Haley Wan set a career high with four goals and eight points to pace the Tigers' offense. Junior Morgan Hallock and sophomore Emily Smith also added three goals each. Freshman Lindsey Kelleher had a four-point outing with two goals and two assists. Sophomore goalie Helena van Brande made six saves in the win.
The match started as a back and forth battle as the two teams were tied at 4-all after the first quarter. After Iona scored the first goal of the second stanza, the Tigers rattled off three straight including two from Smith to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
Princeton's offense continued to excel in the third frame as goals from Wan and sophomore Chelsea Johnson, 24 seconds apart, put the Tigers in front, 9-5. The home team's lead stretched to six before Iona countered with two goals to end the quarter (12-8). A little over four minutes into the fourth quarter, back-to-back tallies by the Tigers put the game away.
