Postmatch video with head coach Billy Pate and junior Josh Yablon
For the first time since 2001, the Princeton men's tennis team has won the ECAC Championship.
The nationally 45th-ranked Tigers completed their three-match march through the bracket with a 5-1 win over No. 60 Cornell Sunday at Penn to end a streak of five appearances in a finals without a win, last in 2008.
Princeton got wins from Alex Day and Luke Gamble on court one and Tom Colautti and Josh Yablon on court three to secure the afternoon's first point, and wins from Diego Vives, Luke Gamble and Alex Day put Princeton over the top.
The win was Princeton's eighth in a row, its longest winning streak since 1996. Extending the streak to a ninth win, which would be its longest since 1981, will take a win over Rice, which was ranked 50th in the nation on Feb. 3, the most recent ITA rankings. The Owls have faced three ranked teams in their last five matches, defeating then-No. 30 LSU 4-3 and Cornell 4-1 before a loss to No. 21 Northwestern 4-1.
Princeton's match against the Owls will take place on Rice's campus in Houston with a 1 p.m. ET start.

Coach Billy Pate on the match: "We knew Cornell would come after us, and they did. They're a very talented team, top to bottom. We were expecting tough matches, which is what we got. Every single match was very close. We're really happy to get through and I'm very proud of the guys." |
